i defragged my computer last weekend and it took 4 days to finish and now i analyzed it today and it was completely fragmented all over again WTF
Did you have 15% or more of free disk space on each partition?
Anyways... 4 days is a really long time... what HD have you got?

u sure ur program is working correctly?
Give Diskkeeper Professional a try, it continously monitor the status of ur drives.
if u still have problems then maybe check if it has bad sectors or is damaged

if it took 4 days i would prolly say that something kept interupting the process and it kept having to restart
aslo if the FAT table or something similiar is messed up it could cause it to misread the amount of fragmentation
i would make sure that all the running processes on your computer are stopped that are not important, and disable any kind of firewall and antivirus and then try to run your defrag again
if anything writes to the disk while it is trying to defrag then it will have to restart the entire process

can a freshly wiped computer with XP Pro recognize a firewire external hard drive without having to format it just so i can drag the files off of it onto the new wiped hard drive

maybe something was running in background, go to control panel and disable task manager... better yet, start windows in safe mode by pressing f8 like a madz0r when you turn on your PC. Then defragment in safe mode
make sure no one messes arround with your comp.
4 das? Hopefully your HD isnt about to die.

yeh, i suggest going to ur hard drive manufacturer's website and downloading a program that will check if ur hard drive is damaged or not. if it is then u better start backing up ur data quick smart in case anything happens, u never know with computers

check your hard drive for errors first. FORMAT and do a FULL format. Better yet, delete partition, create it again and format. That way you have boot record clear.

in command prompt i try to format but it says the format cannot be run because the drive is being used by another process then i go through another step and it says the drive can be formatted if it is dismounted then i try to force dismount and it says it cannot lock the drive

^I don't quite get ur problem?...isn't XP setup gonna do the format for u? Looking at ur problem, I hope u are not trying to format ur drive under windows.
Whilst on the topic of Defragging in general... does anybody know of any good freeware defragger? It's just that the XP one is said to be so inefficient
Thanks for the help :D
Oh and Sachmo... give up, dude.... junk the drive abd get a new one
