The grave of the mother of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf has been damaged by vandals, police said on Thursday.

Earth covering the grave in the western town of Kerpen near Cologne had been removed with a shovel, revealing the coffin although this was not opened, police spokesman Juergen Chrobok said.

It was impossible to tell whether the vandals had chosen the grave by chance or targeted it because of its connection to the Schumachers, the spokesman added.

Elisabeth Schumacher died in April 2003 at the age of 53 and was buried in the cemetery of Kerpen, where she had lived much of her life.

Michael, who has already been crowned world champion this year, and BMW Williams driver Ralf began their careers driving go-carts in Kerpen.

It is really a shame that people would sink to such a low level and do something as bad as that. I am not a Shumi fan myself but that doesn't change the fact that he and his family are humans that ought to be respected as well.

My dad told me this yesterday morning but due to the fact that he dosent speek english very well,he said he heard that they dug schumachers gravei was like :shock: but then he noticed he said schumacher instead of schumachers mthers grave i was like ohhhhhhh.then i thought about how sick that is.its a shame people do these things.

That's totally crazy. Ok, you maybe don't like the driver. But how low can you go? Damaging his mother's grave is just completely sick. Digging a grave up is just so disgusting. How could such an idea slip into a persons mind? Only complete wacko's could have done this. I hope they’re punished very hard, such things are just intolerable.

That is a very disturbing story! Must be done by someone with very serious phychological problems. I feel sorry for the Schumachers. Who would ever have thought that being good at racing cars might instigate a basket case to violate your mother's grave?! Madness...
