I just read an article, Nakamoto (Honda engineering director) reveal that since the Italian GP, the Honda engine developps 980 bhp and they should reach the 1000 bhp bar at the end of the season and later next year. A level never achieved since the 1.5 V6 Turbo engines in the 80's .... :shock:

1000hp...try 1300hp for BMW engines in qualifying. ;)
I heard that this was the objective for the 2005 season. Is interesting, but kinda strange since the engines must last up to a couple of races. BTW, I thought BMW was the most powerful engines in the F1 grid.
Funny, I thought Toyota had the most powerful engines. :D :P
Its amazing how much power they are producing now...almost 1000hp from 3.0L N/A...most cars couldn't imagine getting that much even with a turbo-charger.
Hopefully the Honda engine will be more reliable than it has been in the past. I wonder what some of the other engines on the grid are producing. :?:

Yeah! On Speed the commentators were saying that Honda wanted to put in the 1000 bhp engine in the Japanese GP as they wanted to make a special point at their home race. But BAR said no as it was critical for them to get a good result to beat Renault to second place.
But I'll be really impressed if they can make the 1000 bhp engine last two races as is required in 2005....

Theres a big article about it in racing tech and autosport magazines.
No one knows exact figures but its widely believed that BMW and ferrari have even more powererful engines, toyota is debatable, but still 1000hp out of an NA 3.0 is an amazing feat.
Thats over 330bhp/litre
Considering the best NA road cars are struggling to produce over 110bhp/litre with higher capacities

I am not sure, I don't work in the manufacturers R&D units :wink:

Its not far-fetched - pretty much everyone is in the 900+ bracket with BMW, Toyota, Honda all rated at 950 bhp+. No one talks about Ferrari numbers but with their dominance you can be pretty sure they arent sufferring from a weak engine :)
Now Minardi may be atleast 50 bhp or more short compared to the big guys. I mean the Toyotas and all scream at 19000 rpms and a little beyond while the Minardis are usually at the late 17000s or early 18000 rpms in race trim - this could cause them big time in power.
The Renault engine does not seem to hit 19000 rpms if I remember from onboards ... so it may be a step lower in power than Ferrari/Toyota/BAR.

when BMW got to 22,000rpm they said they were working with around 1100bhp
Toyota claimed they had the most powerfull engine at the start of the season with 960bhp
Renault started out at around 875bhp at the start of this year, and they add a 50bhp up grade right b4 the canadian GP.
ferrari never gives out or claims anything, but by the looks of it, they are at least the top 2 when it comes to power.
cothworth engines give about 890-950bhp to the jab and 50 less to everyone else.

Ferrari should have close to 1000 for the very least. The more important thing is how many Km it will run before blowing up. Iwould guess they have a safety factor of 2.

i was talkin in about the amount of hp they can make compaired to turbo cars (they hit 22,000 two years ago now they are running lower rpms because of the rules)

Here we go Apples and Oranges again.... They are the best of the best in terms of engineering, have a look at an F1 team website when they ask for new employee's you need a degree just to be a cleaner :lol:
No point comparing F1 engines to road engines.... Lets add drag cars to the mix they pull over 5000bhp a pass, and need to be rebuilt between runs...
What I would like thou is that they force all teams to dyno the engines via FIA during the season just to see what BHP they really are getting.

^^^ why? they can just de-tune the engine for the dyno.
and less bhp isn't going to slow down the cars that much.

The renaults do rev lower than say the BMWs - so less hp is very possible

^^^ more torque isn't important in f1, right now without a cpu in control the wheels will just spin on the spot, more torque would just mean more smoke :P

one thing ive heard relating to the ferrari engine is that there are separate engine maps designated during the life of the engine... as its broken in more, it is set to a more powerful map, likely starting the grid at 960hp... but thats just heresay as far as i know, since Ferrari doesnt let info leak :roll:

I wonder when it becomes too much again and the rule makers start putting some limits on engine power outputs, although 1000hp does sound like a very nice number to stop at..heh

BMW has been known as having the most powerful engine on the grid only until the end of the 2002...possibly 2003 season. Toyota has been widely known as having the most powerful engine for most of 2003 and all of 2004. Ferrari definitely isn't lacking in the engine department, but their success is in reliability of the engine. The engine failures are few and far between. Renault has been known as having the torquey engine (RS24) since they got rid of that crazy wide angled V10 (RS23) after 2003.

I agree...but in the last year they have been pretty reliable...okay Sato's engine tends to shit it self quite often, but that i belive is down to his driving style...not the engine...

I don't think that Renault owes their crazy starts due to its torque; rather, I think its because of the launch control software... F1 engines are in essence so similar, that I'm sure that HP and torque figures are almost identical from one team to the other (other than Minardi, of course :wink: )...
And when we're on the topic of most powerful car, the Ferraris this year on many occasions posted the top speed on several high-speed tracks... and I don't think this is due to lower downforce, because if this was the case, then they wouldn't have been so dominant in corners as well... so, Ferrari definitely isn't short of HP 8)

I didn't say that Renault's starts were from the torque. Actually, the torque has been the attribute that has helped Renault in having one of the best cornering cars. The car is able to pick up speed and get to corner exit with more oomph. The starts are due to the "launch control"... setup

Honda, Toyota, BMW and Ferrari have the most powerful F1-engines at the moment. Who has the most powerful engine is not known, since no constructor gives exact details on the BHP-output of their engines. The topteams will probably reach 1000bhp in 2005, but they won't be able to enjoy it much, since there will be a power dropback with the V8's in 2006.
A normal car can't get the power output of a turbo or an atmospheric engine, since the stroke and bore are totally different. If a normal turbo-aspired engine has the same rpm's of an f1 it would tons of bhp's too, but not when they only have a third of F1's rpm's.
