Looks like it'll be another great season. Can't expect anything less from Mr. Clarkson ;)
Wonder how will the Supercharged Ariel Atom do on their track. The NA version was very fast already, will the supercharged version beat the CGT?

Excited for this season to start as always. I wish Top Gear could be an all-year thing, but I suppose it's just as well, they need time for the new cars to come out in order to test them. But anyway.......Lets get it on, Top Gear!

Yes and I should be uploading it less than 30 mins after it finishes.
How can you rip it so quickly? If I edit some digital video and then start the compression process, it takes always at least one hour. I don't even want to say the rendering times for digital video :D
3.8 - 4.0 ghz P4...check out the computer section for more details. Its no accident and with lots and lots of work that I can encode a one hour divx video in less than 15 minutes.
Think I am bullshiting ??? ask anyone that has access how quickly Mondays 5th gear appeared.

Jabba
10-13-2004, 05:55 AM
That also incudes the rendering time as I add a custom logo throughout the video and titles with a transition at the beginning...sounds like your using premiere that can be a bit overkill in certain circumstances.

Just read through my copy of Top Gear, that's about all the info they give apart from Clarkson having a 928 and May having a 944. Both sound like complete sheds so it's bound to be a laugh. They also say they will be launching an ice cream van off a ramp to see how high it will go. Oh, and they buy a bus which gets turned into 'transport fit for the gods'. apparentely.

The program for the 24th of October :
Yes they're back! Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May return for a new series of Top Gear. The power of the new Porsche 911 is put to the test on the track, the Brits take on the Americans and Australians when the Jaguar S type goes head to head with the Vauxhall Monaro VXR and Chrysler 300C; what happens when an ice-cream picks a fight with a bouncy castle; and you get the chance to help to save a bit of motoring history in Restoration.

There is a post all about this somewhere. Basically I have a dedicated PC hooked up to my Sky + Digital box which provides excellent results. However no matter how good the source is cutting a file down from 3 GIG to 180 MB obviously looses a lot of the extra quality gained.

Indeed but the result is more than watchable IMO and you provide Hi Res features of the best bits too which is cool :D . Not sure how much difference HDTV will make :? my brother was going on about it the other day.... 2006 i think we get it over here. **EDIT** also if you bumped the file size up too much those with slower connections will take ages to get it.... not to mention the upload time for you

Yep... do you know what the resolution for our HDTV is going to be...with some luck it might be similar to a DVD or something.
evoWalo
10-20-2004, 10:34 AM
HDTV resolutions are 1920x1080i (i for interlaced) and 1280 x 720p (p for progressive) while PAL is either 720 x 486, 720 x 576 or 768 x 576. The PAL resolution is the same with DVDs.
"Capturing" HDTV signal into a TV is like downloading vids off the Net. No more need for convertions. You just need a HDTV tuner and a very fast rig ala Jabba's monster computer. After removing the copyprotection flags it's just a matter of transfering. A 44min 1920x1080i HDTV program weighed about 5.1GB. I'm guessing Top Gear would be about 7GB and 5th Gear about 3GB. Needless to say this is grossly impractical for almost all.
This isnt a real good comparison but this is the best I could find. Hope you get a picture (pun intended) of what am talking about.
BTW Jabba I've seen your Top Gear - Stig Compilation.avi encode and so far it's the best looking Top Gear clip I've seen so far.
http://www.wmfe.org/dtv/images/16x9aspectratio.jpg.
Most of the XVid HDTV program convertions I've seen have a resolution of 624x352 @ 350MB for a 44min TV program but increasingly some encoders are now offering 1028x576p (p for progressive) @ 700MB for 44min TV programs. Either size are perfect to be stored on a 700MB CD-R, if that's your thing. Heck some encodes even come with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound but that's useless if you dont have that kind of setup.
If anyone's interested I have a Chevy commercial of the pickup convertible (the very one made fun by JC) whose resolution is 1280 x 720p. Just downloaded it cause I was wondering how it looked like. So if anyone has an ftp and wants to host it send me a PM. It weighs in at under 25MB for a 30sec clip.

LOL i'm, not fussy though obviously i prefer dvd rips to some horrible cam jobs... and was suprised to get a decent quality rip of the bourne supremacy recently that included 5 channel sound... didn't know that was possible with divx.... though we played it off my laptop at the time so we don't know is it was "true" surround sound

true surround sound involves digital coax cable or a optical cable. anything else is just emulation.

I have done a few divx rips with 5.1...quite easy to do.... you just add the AC3 5.1 track to the video you are encoding with something like virtualdub.
If someone wanted to convert the Divx later to make a proper DVD and enjoy the 5.1 on a home cinema setup or something...then they only need to separate the sound channel and import it into a good dvd authoring programme that supports 5.1. I still use the very old programme "spruce up" to convert the many movies that I have downloaded that have been encoded with 5.1 sound.
