Hummer H1 is just the marketing name that GM uses to sell it.
Humvee is the army's name for hummer.
The word humvee comes from HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle)
So it's simple GM has the rights to sell the street version hummer to the public.
AM-general builds both the Hummer H1 and Humvee.
