What progs to make .wmv/.avi/.mpg from tape?

I have some shows on tape from TV shows (in german) and wanna make'em available here for you guys, what proggy's do I need? And how to do it :?
I saw WM9 have some VHS grabber or so, but it doenst work to me.

And wich format is the best? .RM? :mrgreen:

I have a question Dan..

I use Premier Pro for different vids I make..
But I can't seem make good compression directly with Premiere, I export it without compression, and the use VirtualDub.. Am I doing something wrong in Premiere?

I'll grab video and try to make it work. How do I do it with VirtDub? Any suggestions? Wich codec to compress is the best? WM 9? Divix?

I would use DivX.. But I guess that's not free anymore, so maybe www.xvid.org
Take a look at the guides on VDub on www.divx-digest.com
They should cover your needs..

You probably selected the "wrong" codec in Premiere. If you have DivX or XviD installed, you can select that in Premiere and export the video. Try to play with the resolution and compression settings to find the right balance between quality and size.

I posted some instructions on making DivX compatible using XviD in the "some new videos" thread. Just do a search to find the right page ;)

Personally, I like using DivX since it's easier to convert avi to other formats. WMV9 creates slightly higher quality video given the same file size, but it's a bit more tricky if you want to convert it to other formats like DivX.

I had this problem last week with the DB9 review on VHS tape.
What I did (thanks to AlienDB7's advice) was record the contents of the VHS tape onto my DV Camera, and then from the DV to my computer using Windows Movie Maker...which gives you a video in the .wmv format.

I choose DivX as codec, but it's still not as good as when I compress it in Vdub with the same settings.. Don't know why :?

well... everything was ready... only cabels somehow dont fit and there is no reduce or new cabels to buy in shops :( - too old video player :oops: :cry:
