I assume you can play .wmv and other types of video on a seperate DVD player (not on your pc). My question is: Is it possible to play DivX-encoded files on a DVD player?

Uhm... not sure.. but I think there are some models able to do it...

The one I was interested in (Panasonic) thought, is not able if I'm not wrong ...

I know of a few:

So far, I've only seen the LVD-2001 on sale in local stores. It's cdn$190 here, so you can probably get it for around $130 euro.

The KISS player has official DivX certification, it used to be on sale at divx.com.

I'm suprised, didn't know that dvd players already can play divx and mpeg 4. It means that in the future you can put all your movies in the dvd player. That's what I need, I have got a lot of small movies that we now play via a laptop linked to the tv via tv output. But you have to maximise the screen with every movie. So this IS the solution for me.

Thanks for your answers. Plenty of info on www.vcdhelp.com, stracing. :D I'll check it out later when I have the time.

So it appears it depends on the dvd player. But what if there's a new divx codec released. I guess your dvd player won't be able to play videos encoded in this new codec then...

to answer the question yes you can play any avi wmp or what ever movie files from the pc into a dvd. One way is to convert the file to a VCD OR DVD format or just wait for next year when all new DVD player will have a codec built in. if you have an Xbox you could watch avi and dvix files on it not sure how my friend crack one.

DivX decompression requires quite a lot of CPU horsepower, so I'd be surprised if any DVD players supported it without first reencoding the video on pc (and hence not making it DivX anymore). I can't get those LiteOn links to work, but I'd be really interested in such a player if it existed (although you'd have to be able to upgrade its codecs somehow for it to be useful).

Actually the dvd player uses a mpeg-4 decoder chip, similar to the one for mpeg-2 (dvd/svcd). Sometime last year (?), sigma designs released a hardware mpeg-4 decoder card for pc using basically the same decoder chip. Info at http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/netstream4000.htm

From what I've heard the lite-on one does support firmware updates. It's actually quite a good deal consider it costs no more than other "brand name" dvd players and has a CF slot for the dig cam.
