racer... pretty old game with great graphyx but I HATE the driving. Cars handles like shit and sound is awful, but on the other hand where will you get absolutely free game of that quality 8)
Worth a try for sure

EDIT: it is already newer version so bugs could be fixed already
thanx for link

I've had this game for ages, in fact i was quite active on the RSC Racer forums, untili just got pissed off with the glitches in the game. There are massess of add-on d/l cars to choose from though, and the graphics are very nice, plus you can d/l the nurburgring track to drive around. Here are some screenies i took:

The Latest version of racer is absolutely gorgeous. In fact at
times when your racing with a well done car and track such as
maybe "Swiss-Stroll" by Tobias Greuter with the "Honda S2000"
by Tobias Greuter & Patrick Wassmer it can almost look photo
realistic at a glance. And as for the handling of the cars, you
have to realize that it's not an arcade game like NFS, it's a sim. :)
I have been using racer for about 2 or so years know and I don't know
of any other game other than perhaps Racing Legends (http://www.racing-legends.com/news.htm) that is
any better as far as realism goes.

Swiss Stroll is stunning, but unless you have a Jabba spec system then all you can expect is a slide-show

This is pretty cool for a free game- theres a lot of novelty value at being able to create and drive all the latest cars.

I thought some of the physics were bit dodgy tho....

Ok...here's a bit of a challenge...I realize this isn't the best game on the market (especially since it's not even for sale), but I have it and have been running the Nurburgring Nordschleife with a BMW V12 LMR completely unmodified (you can modify settings fairly easily if you know what to look for in the code).

The real-life outright lap record is held by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 at 6min 11seconds...I've gotten to 6:17.152 so far...and this should be a significantly slower vehicle than a 956...see if you can match it :-D

Hehehe, ok! Im pretty bad at this game, not sure im going to make it all the way round, but its worth a try!

Do you have any Colin Mcrae 4 (PC) times you want to compare? That would be cool.

Oooo... the car is not available for download at the moment.. any chance you could send it to me?

My best so far is over 8 minutes! Its tricky controlling the cars with a keyboard, because the throttle is either fully on or fully off!

Sounds interesting! Am downloading it rightaway..
Anyway Vansquish, Where can I find Laptimes on Nurburgring Nordschleife?
I know the one you gave was in a Group C Porsche, but I'd like to have laptimes of Stock Production Cars on the Nurb..

Damned good question...and the only thing I can think of is to do a google search for them. I found a whole pile of websites with a plethora of different kinds of laptimes, so I'm sure you can find them if you take a gander.

Here is a discusion on beta 6.1. As you can see, you need to install some other files first, before installing 6.1. Its in the text. Im still reading it myself so I cant really give you a full explanation.

Thanks Jamberl, that link did help but not the initial part (that I saw yesterday), but the last page. Infact the last post seems to be the one we all are looking for..
Here is the link for the ppl who dont want to waste time too much...

Forum Link : http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=160734
Download Link : http://koti.mbnet.fi/pkallo/files/Full_Racer_v0.5.2_beta6.1.exe

Thanks to "Pallokallo" from RSCNet.Org for putting it all up, together..
EDIT : (Just checked, the game is much improved than earlier version. Graphics are awesome for a free game, and this set of package comes with a Spoon S2000, which is modelled real good. Though you might want to back up your downloaded tracks and cars and uninstall the previous version and then install this.. )

By the way, what control method do you guys use? Keyboard or mouse?

And how do you use the mouse anyway? What do you accelerate/brake with?

tigerx

i think you move the mouse forward to accelerate backward to brake

since i'm quite active in the Racer community i suppose i should post a little on here.

for those who complained about he physics, you need to realize this game is being coded by one man in his free time, and all cars are made by the community, so the quality of the car hangling is really up to the people making the cars. overall teh game's physics engine is quite advanced already, and is able to give a realistic feeling if the car is setup properly (this is an incredibly difficult and challenging thing to do, since most of the data required is not actually known, it has to be done by trial and error).

as for using the latest betas, i can't recommend anyone be using beta6.1 because there is a rather noticable bug in the track lighting which causes all the cars to appear way too bright. if you downgrade to beta6 everything should look much much better (assuming you're using a car that was setup correctly for the betas).

jamberl, if you want to know exactly how the control setup is, open the Racer\data\ctrlsets directory and open the INI you're using. that will show you exactly how its set up, so you can change it to whatever you want. there is full documentation on Racer.nl for changing/adding things to the controllers.

and really, to get the most from a Sim you need a steering wheel, so dont' expect it to be that controllable and/or realistic if you're not using one

i'm glad you guys have found an interest in the game though, its really quite a fun sim to make things for (check my site for a couple releases and in a week or 2 i'll have a 3rd release if school allows).

Thanks for the info- I had thought about buying a steering wheel. The idea of controlling a car using 4 arrow keys has already struck me as being a little silly!

By the way, how exactly does one code a game? Ive been interested in this, the idea of actually making a game is really cool, although obviously very time consuming. Very impressive that one person is doing this.

well, i'm not entirely sure what programming language he's coding in, but its one that he can port to Windows, Linux, and Mac. you program a game the same way you do any other application i'd guess, but it obvioulsy involves far more work. for a racing game for example, you have to code the physics engine, graphics engine, sound engine, etc.....
recently he's just been updating the sound and graphics engines, and trying to implement AI and other things that make a game more complete.

I saw the post first and then went to download the game, what a game !! I mean for the graphix you are getting this game is very nice indeed. I even went out this weekend to purchase a steering wheel with pedals and man what a difference it makes. The handling is a little tricky but once you get used to it you can actually do quite a fast lap. I am now determined to get all the tracks possible and cars as well.

Yeah, I kinda understand all that stuff, but I mean I have never actually seen any game coding first hand. I mean I get the basics, but If I actually wanted to code a game myself I would have no idea where to start. Have you done any?

nope, haven't done any myself, but i'm sure it would be a very intersting thing to get into. the most programming i can do right now in Visual Basic.
