I moved it to this section as I think it's better here and general is already full of topics :P

As for an advice, I really don't know.. I was searching for a good MP3 player for my car too, but before it I have to change the suspensions :D

Pioneer makes quality stuff.
Clarion however makes some really crappy stuff. Every device I've had from them has broken. A friend had one of their Car CD players, it crapped out a month after buying it. Had to send it in, and wait a month for them to tell him it's garbage.

My sister and a friend both have a JVC radio (no mp3, though) and they both had to bring it back to the store for repair. Although it was repaired under warranty in both cases, I will never ever consider to buy JVC. Just imagine it breaks two days after warranty expires... My friend also says the sound isn't as good as a Pioneer.

well I went into the shop to buy the pioneer and I saw an alipne one there which had more features, better build quality and almost HALF the price of the pioneer! Naturally I bought it and it rocks hard!

I own kenwoods kdx mp3 player. The price isnt bad and the options are pretty numerous. I would highly recommend it for a mid level mp3 player.

I'd go with the pioneer..I have a P-7400MP with the little cool organic dislplay thingie...it has never let me down...I've had it for two years now...and I got it pretty cheap on the net...it retailed like US$375 in Best Buy...and I got it for like US$246 on some online store...

I have a Pioneer DEH-5500MP. And I don't have to complain about it. It plays mp3's nicely and sounds well with proper speakers. But I think the reception isn't always good. Sometimes the sound is less clear, although it may be cause by my antenna. I dunno.
There is something else that bothers me a bit: it has to much gismo's I don't use and it is a bit to flashy.

Normally I would go for the DEH-P77MP, but my budget wasn't that big ;)

I don't have any experience with the other mp3-headunits, but I can always ask acquaintance of me who has a lot of expercience in this field

Rockford Fosgate makes the easiest to use mp3 player ive seen yet it show the file name of the song and displays about 15-20 letters of filename so it is easy to find the song you are looking for all the other mp3 players ive dealt with are in numbers only when searching

What about an mp3 player that has a hard-disk of it's own rather than playing from CD-R or RWs? Any good recommendations?

I heard that there are very few models of these, but I am very keen on it.

My preferences in descending order:

Eclipse (indash DVD)
Alpine
Pioneer Premier
JVC Arsenal
Clarion ProAudio (kinda iffy)

I think the best for the money would the the Pioneer Premier line along with JVC Arsenal. I'm slightly more biased towards Pioneer's.

pioneer, alpine, and panasonic make some great mp3 head units. alpines tend to run more expensive though. pioneers are great, and one of their biggest appeals is their oel displays. one bad thing to note about pioneer is that they spend a little more time tracking between mp3 songs than other brands. it doesn't bother most people, but my panasonic skips between songs much faster.
