Jay Kay ban for speeding

A pop singer renowned for his enthusiasm for fast cars was banned for six months yesterday for speeding at 105mph.

Jay Kay, 34, of Jamiroquai, admitted the offence on the A9 in Perthshire. Perth sheriff court was told that Kay, of Horsenden, Bucks, was driving home in a Mercedes 4x4 from his holiday home in the Highlands.

CAR-crazy pop star Jay Kay was left to find alternative modes of transport yesterday - after he was hit with a six-month speeding ban.

The Jamiroquai frontman - famed for his love of fast motors - was clocked doing 105mph in his luxury Mercedes.

Mega-rich Kay, 34, admitted breaking the 70mph speed limit on a dual carriageway.

It was the FOURTH speeding conviction for the star.

His fleet of supercars will now be left to gather dust - although, as our pictures show, Kay could always turn to other ways of getting around.

He has already been seen out on a Segway gyro-scooter.

But he might want to plump for a skateboard, pushbike - or even a rowing boat.

As Kay emerged from Perth Sheriff Court in Scotland he sarcastically described the proceedings as "thrilling".

But for real thrills he could invest in a Sinclair C5 electric cart until he gets his licence back.

The runabout is just as much of a head-turner as the Ferrari Spider Kay once paid £450,000 for. [We all know it's an Enzo]

It is cheaper too - at around £700. Top speed is just 15mph but at least there will be no danger of Kay falling foul of a speed trap like the one that caught him on the A9 near Perth

The singer had set off in the Merc - registration V8 JAY - from his Highland estate in Gairloch, Rossshire.

He was heading for his other spread in Horsenden, Bucks, when he got caught in traffic.

His lawyer John Cowan said the star broke the speed limit after seizing the opportunity to overtake.

Mr Cowan added that Kay, pictured below in one of his Ferraris, needed his driving licence to escape from his hectic pop star lifestyle.

He explained: "His house in Gairloch is a hideaway from a very busy professional, international life.

"To drive to the getaway for respite from time to time is very important to him."

Sheriff Robert McCreadie was unmoved - branding Kay's driving "entirely unacceptable".

He fined the star £750. Afterwards Kay left court in a blacked-out Audi - driven by a minder.

A few silly mock-ups by the Sun

Thoughts? Fair/Harsh???

ohh you beat me to it!!

thoughts? if your going to lose your license for 6 months, why not make it worthwhile and commit the offence in, say, an enzo - rather than a merc 4x4 8)
poor bastard. has he been suspended before at all?

hes going to have a mental breakdown with all those lovely, now undrivable, cars sitting around his place.

Enigmatic - i don't believe he has been suspended before, well not so publically :?

That's pretty awful...

I read he bought 75 acres of land, so if I were him I'd build a private track on that. Otherwise I'd go mad being banned from driving those wonderful cars.

Oh the G is way better than the ML so he is partially excused :D

Anyway someway I doubt he will really stop driving his cars for 6 months :P

The G is an awesome looking thing too

I'm not sure if he would risk driving while excluded... it's not worth it. I don't know bout the penalties, but he would get an even longer ban. His local police probably already know him and his cars, so he will probably get spotted if he goes out in the Muira, Enzo, Phantom or G55 :|

I believe he has an extensive 'drive'. He has written a car off on his land. He also has a dirt track for buggies. It won't make up for the 6mths, but it is better than most!

I know people who have been doing close to the 100mph mark when they got caught. Most got away with a fine, one person got a ban, but he already had points. I don't know how many points JK already has, it will have affected the outcome, as will the fact that he is well know for driving quick. The Local courts have made a very public example of him.

I had heard he was driving the RS6 in another forum but who knows and the total of points seems to be 9. Three he took in July for another offense and 6 for this.

It was deffo the Merc

Nice BBC link.

They got it wrong again though  ... what is this £450k Spider??? I want one.

Kay - who once splashed out £450,000 on a 220mph Ferrari Spider and has a large collection of vehicles - has previous convictions for driving offences.

He was banned before, it seems ...

He was banned in 1998 after he was clocked at 111mph on the M40 in a Ferrari F40.

He must have gone in the merc G class once in the 5th gear celebrities special program, there was a report where Jay Kay showed almost all the cars that he owns....and a grey merc G class was one of them...and the numberplate was quite similar to the mentioned earlier...anyway...once its only a 6 month fine, its not a big problem, once he can go fast in his own fast cars as a codriver which its not that bad, and also he can drive the car and do the best of him in some racetrack

To go on a trackday in the UK you need a "valid" driving licence.. that means, NOT banned. :| I guess if he really wants to drive his cars on a track, he will hire the circuit for just himself, lol

Lol I would have expected Jay to have at least got banned in something more exotic, like in the Enzo for doing 200 Mph on the A1! I think he now will have the worst temptation of a petrol head - walking past a Miura SV, then an Enzo... and not being able to drive them!

i'll put it to u this way, if it was a 17 year old driver, it would be all over the news on how reckless he was!

that exact report was in the local paper, and i also saw that part about ferrari spider!! HAHA

thanks thenumberone for this correction once here in Spain its not compulsory to have the driving license to drive on a racetrack as far as i know....if so.........Jay Kay can have some fun on the racetrack in some karts....its not necessary the driving license to ride a kart,,,,,otherwise...its good idea to hire the racetrack just for himself...je je je....

evreywhere in the world, it is legal to drive on private land, i could take a 3 year old to the local racetrack in theorie.

there is ovisley public liablity insurance, and some tracks require you to have a "racing licance" such as "CAMS" in australia.

and it doesent matter if you lose you're road licance to you're racing licance.

^^^ This is not the same for most trackday events, which is what thenumber1 was trying to get across.

Trackday events require a car that is approved for use on public roads and a driver with a valid driving license. Therefore not even racing cars can take part and drivers who don't have a driving license but do have a racing license can't drive at such an event. It probably has something to do with insurance concerning the organisation of trackdays.

I'm glad to see that the system punishes even start in the U.K. However, the penalty seems a bit exagerated.

The system we have in the Uk is stupid, way too exaggerated for speeding offences. Banned for six months for doing 110? that isn't a very hard speed to get up to, i mean the majority of this board can drive that fast(or slow) very easily.
It is all a revenue issue, which is so frustrating, and i suspect that insurance companies are involved in these sort of penalties. For instance, you do 47 mph in a 40, and you will get at least 3 points, £60 fine, and to top it off, a premium excess on every car you are insured on.
I do feel for Jay tho, six months is a very long time to be without driving.
If he needs anyone to take out the Enzo, or any other of his beauties out for a spin, I'm sure i could help him out...

not really, actually the fine is pitiful, I bet anyone whether they're a millionaire or a unemployed student would get the same fine for that here .. except of course £750 is nothing to JK

IMO Finland's system is much better, where the fine is worked out in relation to the offender's salary :D

Autobahns are nice, but what about the Nurburgring(the old long one)!
I love that track! :D
What are the rules there?
Probably has Schumi in the rolodex anyway, don't think he would have any trouble finding skilled drivers(ok, maybe not Schu, he needs to work on that dog of a car......).
What would a private party performance from the king of cool cost?
