Fully agree on all those mentioned, but I have some others to add.

Saving Private Ryan
The Deer Hunter
Apocalypse Now

I have yet to see All Quiet On The Western Front (based on Erich Maria Remarque's 'Im Westen Nichts Neues'), both the original from the thirties and the TV movie from '79, but I hear they're pretty good too.
I'm also very anxious to see Der Untergang, soon appearing in cinemas.

Worst war movie ever: Pearl Harbor

band of brothers and saving private ryan are top of my list,i like pearl harbour but as brembo said its a romantic love story more than a war film, well 3/4 of it anyway.

I would like to add

1. Das Boot / The Enemy Below /Run Silent Run Deep - submarine thrillers
2. Patton
3. The Bridge on the River Kwai
4. The Longest Day
5. Operation Petticoat - funny
6. Where Eagles Dare
7. The Great Escape
8. The Guns of Navarone
9. Tora Tora Tora
10. The Scarlet and the Black
11. All quiet on the Western Front
12. Braveheart - though I am yet it see it from beginning to end (I have seen it 7 times and always got interrupted :D)

Some of the above listed movies show battle scenes while the rest are constructed with the war going on in the background.

My favorite in the above set? --> "All quiet on the Western Front" - a pathbreaking anti-war war movie. It is black and white and is a silent movie but the way it presents war is magnificent. A must see in my book .....

LOL, Sameerrao beat me to it, he listed a lot of good movies.
Band of Brothers easily tops the list, everyone should see that at least once.
Midway is a classic
Behind Enemy Lines
We Were Soldiers
Pearl Harbor was good, even with it's hokey love story
Stripes, does that count as a war movie?
Thats all I can come up with at the moment.

What about 'we were soldiers' with mel gibson? The book of that was quite good, very detailed account of a particular battle of the vietnam war.

Anyone who hasn't seen band of brothers- I can tell you it is totally worth getting the DVD set, ive watched it about 5 times already.

Saving Private Ryan. I loved that movie. I wasn't old enough to watch it when it first came out, and my parents watched Soldier instead (rubbish movie). I watched it a year after it came out and again recently. I love it still.
Band of Brothers is a great movie as well.

But for watching something on TV. I'd say those documentaries on CBC. I learned a lot from those.

anyone ever watched Tour of Duty? that used to be my daily tv show when i was a kid living in texas. i don't know why but i've always been attracted to war flicks and shit. but then again who wouldn't wanna carry guns and run around the jungle shooting hostiles. it's kinda like playing hide and seek as a kid except instead of tagging the other guys you get to throw bombs at them.

Damn, I forgot this.
I love the movies from Tom Clancy's Books.
And Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies.

I would have to say my favourite is The thin red line with Nick Nolte.
It was a movie that dealt with the mental effects of war on the men and also an insight into the depth of despair at knowingly sending men to their deaths for the "greater good".

Das boot is also up there as a close second; it is a crime that Jurgen Prochnow has not been in more "serious" movies.
Love the bit where they are singing "its a long way to Tipperary" :D

Full metal jacket, Platoon, Apocylpse(sic) Now (Redux), Heartbreak Ridge are all good action movies.

But if I want realism, then just watch a documentary on WW1, saw a good one the other night "the great war" on the battle of the Somme.
Puts these peoples sacrifice into perspective, a whole generation gone, for a few miles of ground gained in horrendous conditions.
