HEPCO SPONSORS THE THRUST SUPERSONIC CAR

26th September 1997

As the world watches this British engineering achievement reach its goal of Mach 1, the Thrust project team can already claim the fastest officially recorded speeds ever, 719.137 for the mile.

Today, Squadron Leader Andy Green set a new land speed record of 714.144 mph driving the twin Rolls Royce Spey engined jet car ThrustSSC on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA.

British Bearing Manufacturer, Hepco, reflects on their sponsorship commitment and the enthusiasm of the Thrust project leader.

Richard Noble, Director of the Thrust SSC project enthusiastically confirmed, "Designing, building and racing a supersonic land speed record car has got to be one of the most exciting experiences on the planet!" It is precisely for this reason - and to contribute to the wealth of British engineering talent behind the project - that Hepco Slide Systems of Tiverton became a sponsor.

In addition to financial support, Hepco's three year contract has included the provision of linear motion products and full use of the company's manufacturing facilities. Hepco's Heavy Duty slide system has already been chosen to move battery packs in and out of the 100,000 HP, seven tonne car. Additionally, Hepco's Power Transmission Division is currently undertaking specialist turning work for the project.

"Hepco is delighted to be involved in this exciting project," comments Ray Hall, Hepco's Sales and Marketing Director. "It's a wonderful example of British innovation and expertise".

I know many of you know about this car just wanna show anyone that doesn't Plus if this car has been beaten please lock this thread and correct me.

In 1995, Noble set up a consortium of partners to design, develop and manufacture a new vehicle called Thrust SSC. The goal was not only to break the record but also go supersonic. At Black Rock Desert this meant travelling from 0 to over 800mph and back to 0 over a distance of 7 miles in less than a minute.

I think this is a repost.... ive seen this car before and people agreed that that isnt a car, more like an airplane without wings.

its a car. To prove it is it took a test it has 4 wheel and had to go up and down a hill or something (I don't remeber) to be a car and the Budweiser Jet Car didn't pass. But a American jet car is on its way to try and beat the record.

the budwiser car not getting the record is so gay. It only had 3 wheels, 2 in the front and one in the back so they wouldnt accept it. this car has the same setup accept the stuck an extra wheel inline behind the back one.

I have a lot of respect for the designers and people who made the car go this quickly, but I just wish that the speed record was actually held by a car with an internal combuestion engine, rather than a jet plane with no wings.

its not rely a car, because the engine doesent power the wheels, it just runs on thrust.

a GT-90 uses two tiny fused jet engines but its not in this league.

I agree with possessed_beaver: a real car is powered by the wheels, otherwise it's a plane without wings. And I still doubt whether it has to be a piston-engine driven car or not...

The record for that kind of car is considerably lower. Around 650 km/h or something like that?

that ride would be pretty intense.

id rather have a normal fast car any day...
id also much rather break records high in the sky, then on the ground... to much air is at the ground, so a integrity limit will aproach before our stratospheric limits are breached...
mach 25, here i come
also... the speed of sound slows as air pressure drops :)...yea!
