its gonna be obsolete soon too when the hologram based cd (dont really know the name) comes out
it can store more than 1000gb...

Basic physics behind that...has to do with the amplitude and frequency of the light...the more blue/purple the light of the laser, the more confined the beam can be...and hence the more data can be stored in the same amount of space.

I heard Blue ray disc players are already out in japan for around $5000, and Playstation3 will be using this format.

The more towards the blue spectrum, the higher the frequency and therefore the lower the wavelength.

and of course the shorter the wavelength the closer the pits/flats on the CD surface can be to each other, resulting in greater capacity.
I also heard that the PS3 will use this technology, its been around for awhile.

Does this mean I will have to soon replace my DVD collection? Or are we talking more ps3, computer games e.t.c and not films?

^^^

Yup.. they are saying that they will not have to make double-disc films, and will be able to use the same quality for the extras as the main feature :D

They will also be able to put many more audio/subtitle tracks on each disc too

This article is a great read :D
