it killed doom 3 by 10 frames per second. firewall's lame you're better off with zonealarm. friend used it on a pirated xp and it worked.

Yeah, you can install it on a pirated copy.

The pop-up blocker is the best part of the entire service pack!

But I had to uninstall SP2 because of a very strange thing:
whenever I selected a file, and right clicked on it, the damn hourglass mouse pointer showed, and the system froze, untill I pressed ctrl+alt+del, and ended "Dr. Watson". After I ended it, the system recovered... the same thing happened if I wanted to delete a file: I selected the file, pressed delete, and the system locked. The only way I could delete the damn file was dragging it into the recycle bin!!!

Anyone else had these problems?

I experienced this bug too, but after the 3rd restart it was gone, I don't know how or why cuz I just restarted... :roll:

If you format, do you need to install SP1 in order to install SP2?

It's even better to do a format & install sp2 then to install sp2 over sp1.

Thamar is basically saying that it would be better to do a clean install with SP2 than to install SP2 on top of SP1.

how did you guys even get SP2?
I run windows update automatically and it says I still have SP1 but when I go to Windows update it says it's not available yet and that your location (especially outside the US) will determine when you get it and that windows update automatic users will get it before others and so far only companies have been able to receive it.

I just had a look on the windows site, and you can get it to distribute onto multiple computers - for office managers of a computer network, but you can not get it for just a single computer yet.

im running SP 2 on the original pirated edition of xp... running w/out a re-format for over 2 years now :)

by the way, windows xp build 2600 sp2 :twisted: i had it about a month and a half before the official release :)

SP2 is not part of windows update. At least for me, it doesnt appear as a dloadable file. All I got is SP1. Do I have to pay/dload somewhere else? Anyone provide link to SP2 plz?

according to Microsoft they will shortly be providing SP2 to Automatic Windows Update users very shortly the thing isn't available yet unless you are a company with multiple user licenses. It isn't listed as available to anyones else yet, I have heard that the versions people have already that haven't received through a company license have the wide spread Beta version that was released a few months back and is only 75% of the official release version with all the bugs worked out that some of the above have mentioned and others. They have been working on this for sometime now and You should have it in the next few weeks if you activate Automatic Windows Update.

Yeah I do manual updates. Then surely this SP2 will appear shortly. Its supposed to be a great improvement from what I read in all the PC magz. Then again, all that info was based on what Microsoft promised, but lets see what it is they will deliver.

Having been part of an SP2 review for corporate roll-out - do yourself a favour and test before you just SP2 your shit.

If you any custom applications or components that may rely on default windows lack of security be prepared for shit to start breaking everywhere... ;)

Besides.. if shit isn't broken - there is no need to just SP2 for the sake of SP2...

Its not quite $500, but over $400 anyway so it is fairly expensive.

I won't be getting SP2, because like RC45 said there is no need of nothing is wrong atm. I don't use IE6 anyway so don't need the pop-up blocker and I haven't had any security problems either.:D
My next upgrade will be when Longhorn comes out in about 25yrs or whatver it is. :wink:

Software wise I have payed for it all if it required it. I have programs that are free online but no pirated software.

BTW, I downloaded form http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165b076b-aaa9-443d-84f0-73cf11fdcdf8/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe , and it seems to be the FINAL version.

Why would you even consider paying the bastards at microsoft hundreds of $$$, when you can download it for free? They get billions of dollars in profits anyway... and its not like they improve their products in any case :wink:

Nope - not issues.

This is what all you Linux yahoos asked for - a more secure Windows platform out of the box.

This is what you get with SP2 for XP.

But y'all forgot one important thing.

How do you think all the previous 86 million software titles worked so easily out the box?

There was very little "environment security" hindering all the feature sets of the software.

Now these "open doors" that allowed all your games and other tings to operate flawlessly are closed or removed.

The result - you get what you asked for. Linux looking like XP.

In other words you now have to custom tune and modify EVERYTHING... :)

from the experience i've had with sp2 at work, the fancy looking new windows firewall is enabled by default, which is going to be an inherent issue for corporations.
on our corporate network, for example, of around 200 xp pc's, the sp2 firewall will block off our anti-virus updates, remote control software, and anyone running the client software for our Titan building security system (door access etc, mission critical - obviously).

all this was realised in only 1 hour of testing, so who knows what else is to come.
also, the software used by our finance staff simply dosn't work with sp2 - "sp2 compatability will be announced with future software updates" is all the software makers have to say. not good when you have over 30 such users.

then when you've got another 100-odd xp machines run by researchers with all sorts of critical software, it can get a little complicated.

luckily we have the ability to simply block sp2 with our SUS policy, but it ofcourse can't go on like that for too long.

ok for home users, but a pain in the ass for us. :x

there must be some way to deploy a custom firewall configuration to suit our machines - or possibly create a custom sp2 msi to blast out.

I have just installed SP2 3 days ago and no problems yet. On the good side, I have only seen that its firewall is better. Previous firewall made some problems while accesing computers on your network, this time it doesnt. It also is better on some of the Wizards, but other than that, no major improvements.
