i want to know about kit cars the positives and negatives about them. i saw a few on kitcars.com and they are at good prices and look almost like the real thing, some of them, but obviously lack the performance. how do you get the molds/car frames? do they come with official markings or are they replicas symbols. is it legal to replicate a ferrari symbol on a kit car? is it possible to soup up these kit cars to get more hp? what do you list it under insurance, what name brand? if anyone can answer these questions or know how to get the answers via website, book, store it would be greatly appreciated.

Lets say if you have a fiero chassi, and you stick some ferrari 308 fiber glass body panels you'll probably pay the insurance of a normal fiero.

As for badges, you can always buy them somewhere, but the originals will cost more then the kit car lol.

Sure you can sup em up, but why? I dont think fiero's little POS engine can handel any mods, and you wont get much out of it.

I've seen a few kit cars around the city, one of them was a 308 and you can tell that its a replica right away, if you saw a real 308 before.

Kit cars are shit. Dont get into them, dont buy one.

I hate everything that is fake. And if a car looks fast and doesn't deliver, well thats just plain stupid. This means that I would never want a Ferrari kit car or anything similar.

What I would like to have e.g. is a Renault Clio kit car (or preferably something RWD). An official one, meant for rallying. Simple, stripped down, and an engine that can perform.

I don't have a lot of info about kit cars, but I suggest you look for Caterham, probably the best know kit car around. And if you find some more info, please let us know. :D

kit cars are crap but i've seen some that are really really good, exact replicas of the 355, there are some that are poor and obvious to us car nuts but what about the average joe. or even a hot blonde. he/she wouldn't be able to tell a kit car from the real ferrari adn thats why i think these kit cars exist. so that some joe shmoe can get a fake ferrari and have ppl think its a real one. the obvious give away would be the engine sound and performance but to an average person they might not be able to tell. thanks for the answers and i just wanted to know more about kit cars, i definitely dont plan on getting one.

I really dont like them that much simply becasue your hard work does not pay off in the end if you decide to sell it. There are some kits that a pretty cool. But it would not be my choice in transportation.

Humm, there are some good kit cars out there. The only one I would be tempted to get is a replica of a Cobra. I have seen some stunning ones, they have the performance to match too.....5.8ltr Chevy V8 for example....ain't going to be slow. However, these are by no means cheap! That is one type of kit car, i.e a replica: Insurance wise, there are specialist insurance brokers that deal with kit cars....usually go on engine size.

The other type of kit car is a different kettle of fish. You can, buy and build a Westfield, dunno if they have got beyond the UK, so go here for more info: http://www.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/ You can either build these cars from scratch yourself or have them half made for you, or fully made. The insurance for these is simpler, as they can come fully made, they are classed as a 'production' car, therefore an insurance co. will recognise them as such.

Some people get a buzz out of building their own cars. I would not mind having a go at building a Westfield, not sure about the Cobra, I would always want the real thing.
