Ice cream for safe drivers
by Associated Press posted Jul 29, 2004
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police have taken a licking for a new program that rewards motorists who drive safely by stopping them and giving them coupons for free ice cream.

Sgt. Don Jantzen of the North Patrol Division said residents expressed concerns about the program and the department's legal counsel advised officers to stop it. He said the division commander will revamp it and come up with a new approach within two weeks.

Paula Talley was rewarded Monday for wearing her seat belt and yielding to traffic. She said she was afraid being stopped would make her late for work, although she made it on time.

"My job probably wouldn't have cared about free ice cream," she said.

Bill Calvert was stopped for driving the speed limit and using his signal. He said he could see people getting upset by such stops if they "were in the wrong frame of mind."

Sounds pretty stupid, yes.

Why don't they have a non-police day so people can go fast as they want? :)

that would piss me off a lot, if I saw a cop I would forget to signal or something just to avoid getting pulled over.

instead of catching criminals, this is just another example of wasting taxpayers money.

i dont understand how people are pissed jesus. They hate cops when they get pulled over and get a ticket, and they hate cops for rewarding them? wtf.

That is dumb...complete waste of tax money and considering the fact that I dont even really like ice cream makes it an even dumber idea..

lmfao, i believe there was a similiar prog running here in australia.

but i think they have stoped it now, after realising that they could pull people over and fine them and make money.

Eum, probably that's a small county. What crime is there in a small county? A farmer that fucks his cows, a child that pisses in his neighbours mailbox, ...
All they have to there is traffic, traffic & traffic.

LOL thamar... they probably don't have that much crime in comparison to a bigger state or city

hahahahaha! That's hilarious!

It sounds like a pretty bad idea, since it wastes people's time.

i think they should have just mailed out the coupons (using the address obtained from the license plate)
at least people won't be scared by the police, lol

What's worse, getting pulled over by a cop (with a smile on his face) or walking home from the mailbox with a letter from the police dept ;)

you know how many times ive been in a rush to get somewhere and the mere inconvienece of getting pulled over/being late outweighs the actual ticket?

so yeah, unless im on a leisurely drive home from the gym, im usually going somewhere. and getting pulled over to get some stupid coupon for not doing anything wrong inconveniences me greatly.
