Get ready for the cynical Porsche to reappear again as the new £30K ($50K) Boxster Coupe spawns lots of variants to make up for flagging Cayenne sales ...
When the new 2.7 & 3.2 litre Coupes appear in 2006 they will herald a number of new models including a 2.7 & 3.2 litre RS, a 3.4 litre coupe, plus a turbocharged 2.7 all with Targa options. Porsche has decided that even tweaked Boxsters will not tread on the new 911's toes as it too will get new engines (including a V8 ), so engineers and marketing men have gone mad creating lots of "New Models".
Although the mainstay models (the roadsters) will look and feel different, have better interiors and more standard equipment, Porsche had gone for an evolutionary approach and is not going too far with performance upgrades. Remember, the heavier 911 Cabrio is £30K ($50K) more than a Boxster and there the marketing men have drawn a line to protect sales.
Unfortunately, that means that the direct injection petrol engines will NOT appear until the first Boxster face lift (2008 ish). Porsche say it's because the motors are not ready, the truth is: they are ready on the Boxster, but not on the 911 - narrowing the performance gap too much for the marketing mens liking. On the upside, expect a huge improvement in quality and better value, for even the basic Boxster will get 6-speed gearbox, air-con and part leather trim - making the car a real bargain against Audi, BMW, Merc and the new Japanese competitors.
Having talked to insiders, I still feel that Porsche has held the Boxster back, Their marketing men have decided that the badge is so sacred that they do not even feel any competition from the up-and-coming Jaguar F-Type which will boast aluminium construction, beefy motor, high trim levels, great performance - and devastating looks.
