Does anyone know how to make a site (such as your own) come at the top of the search engines??

I have been searching for this but i haven't got a straight answer (if there's one) about this. Some say the search engines look at the keyword of the site, some other say it counts the number of search being made.

Does anyone know anything about this or have any info or links that talk about this??

Me and my cousin are trying to start a IT company so the search engines are very a important way of getting people to our site.
There’s nothing done yet got the ideas and the money to start the hosting and the legal stuff.

They work on 2 principles depending on company.
The first is that some companies pay the search engines a fee to be listed first. Otherwise I know for a fact they work based on word hits. I've spent time working with the underlying google architecture, since my senior graduation project from college was a search engine.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to pay a lot or have a lot of hits to end up on the first page for any search engine.
