View Full Version : MB vs BMW

SPEEDKILLAR

It seems there is a never ending discussion about this.

First of all, I love MB aswell as BMW

Secondly, both have some imperfections.

Third of all, both have more or less same goals.

But does BMW has any supercars? No the haven't.

Does BMW has as much $$ as MB? No, they don't.

Does BMW has a wide variety of models as MB? No

What I'm trying to say, there's no need comparing both manufacters

Because BMW is "smaller" they can work more concentrated, and therefore produce some amazing cars

So please ppl, don't make this MB vs BMW, its quite useless, and trying to portray MB as an "inferior" carbuilder

For the most part, I agree with what you said about MB & BMW in your first post SPEEDKILLAR...but I think BMW definitely makes better cars, at least in the eyes of a sports-car enthusiast...but that's not what this topic is about?

Umm, what was the point of this thread again?

hmmm.... sentra_dude...u said they make better cars..
well has the bmw got any version of the SLR or SL ? or even the CL ?

What sentra tried to say is that BMW build driver's cars while MB is more into luxury Autobahn cruisers packed with 3000 safety electronic systems you can't turn off ;)

Exactly.

Only that BMW uses better materials for their interiors...

...making them much more luxurious...

...and they can do the autobahn too...

...and any track...

you guys get the picture. :)

BTW, can you all just QUIT calling the SLR a supercar? Ron Dennis himself stated "The SLR is just a GT that exceeded our expectations."

Case closed.

3 series > C-class
5 series > E class
7 series > S class
Z8 > SL
M > AMG

Uhu ;) (just playing around)

Here we go again, is that why MB sells more Autobahn machines.

And ooh yes, a 7 would do miracles on a track, please cut the crap.

Guys....think about the past models...MB was always a leader, and BMW was far away...

BMW became good by the 80's.... :)

Its like Audi......they gained their reputation in the 90's.... :)

Mercedes was always a pioneer....

Regarding Merc's...

I own two. A classic 280SL and a C-class. My dad owned a merc too. My late grandfather owned several (including the old CL's, which we've tried to maintain)

...and I'll tell you, based on my experience, Mercedes-Benz TODAY is only a shadow of Mercedes-Benz BEFORE. Ever since the DaimlerChrysler merger, everything turned into shit. You have a CLK which "hands" the driver his seatbelt, while a much more expensive CL which does not. Why is that? Why pay more for a GT which does not pamper you? Do you know that both the CLK and the CL do not have driver memory? This may sound trivial, but because the seats are electronically operated, once a rather short human uses the car before you, and sets the seat that way, you will have a VERY difficult time getting the seat back to the way you want. Why? Because it doesn't have driver memory. You have lots of plastic in a pricey E-class, and an almost Ford-level build quality in the C-class. You have plastic in the SLR... why? Why is that?

Why sell the SL without a manual? Why make supercharged cars without a manual, or at least a paddle-shift?

Why go down market when you're regarded as a classy manufacturer? What was the point in the A-class? Isn't the C-class enough? To give people their first taste of MB? If that's the case, why destroy their trial with a plastic interior and a shit ride?

Why make delivery vans and then pass them off as passenger vans? Why?

etc. etc. etc.

Mercedes has LONG forgotten where they came from. The racing lineage which they once proudly stood for. They have turned into Ford, just with more brand presence... something which they proudly abuse to no end.

They have lost ALL passion. They have simply become a profit-turning machine.

Blah.

Next time you want to ride in luxury, go take a peek into the Audi or BMW showroom instead. But if you want the best BRAND NAME in the auto industry, then by all means, buy a Merc.

Unless they regain sight of WHO they were in the past, the shoddiness of their products will continue.

The end.

I don't know about the old CL....but mine has a driver memory....(if you mean the personal adjustment of the steering wheel, e. seat, mirrors).... :?

Maybe the specifications here aren't the same as there.....

The supercharged MBs have paddle shift gears....(buttons at the back of the wheel).... :)

One thing is true....newer MB models are not as reliable as in the 80s-90s......but still they are more reliable than BMWs in any category....

Which CL do you own? CL500? or the 600? We checked out a 500 at a local showroom and there was no driver memory.

The supercharged MBs have paddle shift gears....(buttons at the back of the wheel).... :)

Normally, I wouldn't place those two in the same category, (buttons which pick from an automatic transmission... etc. etc., but that's a different topic altogether) but I think I'll focus on this bit:

One thing is true....newer MB models are not as reliable as in the 80s-90s......but still they are more reliable than BMWs in any category....

I actually agree with you on this. I'm not saying Bimmer's are not reliable, but Mercs are just a little bit more.

I don't have any where to post the pics, but if somebody's willing to host them, let me know, I'll email you as soon as I get them.

It's saturday moring over here at the moment, and I'll be home sunday. I'll take them as soon as I get home.

I'm surprised people don't believe that I have an old SL. It's not the gullwing anyway, so its not exactly a big deal.

Now if you're looking for the "several" my late grandad owned, forget it. They're all gone. Only the CL's are left.

I don't know much about the E320 CDI....but I read about the 530d...which is

great!!! Because these are disel cars....tourqe is the main issue....both

models have the same 500Nm....BMW(218) has more Bhp then MB(204)... :?

For me every make has lost its reputation and policy of making reliable and good cars, and makes have become companies which produces cars to make money and profit......and therefore nobody makes cars as reliable as 20 years ago....for instance more problems of manufacturing, adjusting.....aren inusual things in models of merc,.....the saab are feeded by the opel engines, the volvo engines are going to become ford engines, bmw has had many problem with its turbodiesel engines....with their injectors, and their turbos....audi has got similar problems, and exactly the same engines as any car of the VAG group.....

Picturetrail won't upload them, so I'm trying my luck with the other hosting sites... I took pics of the cars's factory brass, in my attempt to prove that they're not kits, (even though they're not really that impressive to begin with) but the flash sort of muddled it up.

I couldn't finish uploading the old CL pics (or "CE", as MB used to call it before it used the CL badge) due to lack of time, and a very slow upload speed. I'll upload them when I do have the time.

At that time? you bet.

I spotted a rare old 8-series BMW on the road today though. It went too fast for me to catch it. I'm currently in the process of locating who owns it. I'll try to post pics if I do find the chap when I can.

Sir GT... the new S class... is gonna blow the 7 series...

by statistics did u know that for evey 1000 7 sold 1640 S classes were sold in the WHOLE world......

The build quality is apparently going to be absolutely amazing...
slightly based on the Mayback...
speaking of the Mayback do u think that is Cheap .. the interior?
Many reviewers said the inside was better than the phantom..

Sir_GT
06-28-2004, 11:11 PM
The S-class is as good as it can get, no doubt. If I were to choose between a 7 and an S, I would get an S. I honestly can't wait for the 2005 S, but primarily because the shareholders at DaimlerChrysler had a go at current CEO Jurgen Schrempp. (sp?) They cited the current drop of consumer satisfaction among other things, so I'm expecting the upcoming S-class to be used as the platform to put these complaints to an end.

I wouldn't be surprised if the materials used would be below par though, since Schrempp is still gunning for a globalization strategy.

Mind you, the fact that the S-class is only outselling the 7 by a margin of 600 units isn't promising for the S, especially if their quality issues aren't addressed, and BMW gets a new designer. lol. :)
