In a month or 2 I will be getting my G2 (full License). So far the cars I am looking to buy are: Talon TSI AWD, Nissan 240sx (might dump a sr20DET or something), 4th/5th gen Honda Prelude (no not a ricer...). These cars are almost in the same price range (Excluding the 5thgen Lude). I've searched around, did a little research on these cars and they all seem decent. Seeing how many of you know a lot more about cars than me, I just wanted to know what would be the best to get or other car(s) that would be worth getting in that price range.

U know my vote: SR20DET 240
If not, go for the Talon TSI AWD... that would be my 2nd choice.

wow what a comeback. Get your license first then a car then you can start talking about your car being faster lets start there. Personally I would say the 240 but it definitely isn't in the same price range with the SR20DET in it.

?? hahaha

BTW, heres wut u'll be lacking on the cars u choose:
240 - hmm, maybe about 4 cylinders
TSI - a few cylinders, and u'll deffinitely need some turbo tuning :P
Lude - Wrong drivetrain, FWD!?! who invented that!! Accountants, thats who... not race car drivers.

Those cars are http://torontostreetracing.com/forum/images/smiles/wood.gif

Yo T-bird I was being sarcastic man, I know hemi_fan ... Anyways how much is the sr20det engine swap? I thought the sr20det was like 2500 CAN the s14 about 3600 Can and the s15 about 5500? I mean I could find like 240sx for like 3k canadian then swap. The ludes are there just becuase I heard they are reliable and nice to cruise around in, but true FWD is gay...

T-Bird
06-22-2004, 08:37 PM
ok but you're planning on about atleast 6500 Canadian dollars on the car but that's probably not the best condition for both and if you got it done at a shop you're talking about a bitchload of labor and you need to change more than just a motor when you do a swap most of the time.

BTW gotta love the Aqua Teen Hunger Force I love that show!

So if it isnt worth it, what car that is relatively cheap is worth getting? Yeah Aqua Teen hunger force is one of my favorite shows :D .

ha, i asked this question 3 years ago and hear is my decision...

i bought a 95 eagle talon tsi awd. i was considering a 240 with sr swap but decided upon this. I could buy the talon and be fast now. Or I could buy the 240 and be slow for 2 years until I could afford the swap. Don't let these people on the internet fool you. An sr swap is expensive if done correctly. Also a slightly modded 240 can't hang with a awd dsm, period. trust me, been there and proven that around atlanta. get the dsm, you live where it snows and awd is a safety thing too. plus its fun to roast vettes off the line. so get the dsm, mod it carefully and take care of it EXTREMELY carefully, and you'll be happier, faster.

Alright, but I heard that like Talons were unreliable and shit... Is that true?

I actually hear they are pretty decent in reliability. Eagle was owned by Chrysler which has a terrible reliability reputation, but the cars were made by Mitsubishi, so they arent that bad. I think the only problem would be the Turbo, since it would be fairly simple to raise the boost, the engine might have trouble handling the extra PSI and detonate... but im not a DSM pro.

That depends on the year.. The second gens of the dsm trilogy had a major problem with crank walk. They can be made fast for cheap though. I would avoid the automatic though, as all chrysler automatics have the life expectancy of a small tape worm.

That is extremely true. Our plymouth went through 2 trannies in under 6 years with NO towing or heavy driving... that thing was a POS.

Not a bad choice for a car...especially considering you live in Canada. That AWD will really be good for the winter. But you should get some driving experience before starting to modify the car. We don't want you to get mangled up. :|

Lol Zonda, 500hp!!! :? If i put about 100 stickers on my moms car with 50 hp per sticker I will burn him, with an auto too :P 8) :squarewink:  Hmm, two more questions, what about safety regarding alarms and shit. My friends tell me it is easy to break into a lot of cars: slim jim, the battery restart thing, key locks with screw driver rotating it breaking all the pins ,etc... I might be paranoid (coming from the America...), but uh what alarm systems are worth getting? And what websites are there for newbs like me about car maintenance and general car info so the mechanic guy doesn't rip me a new asshole on unneeded shit?

As far as maintenance goes, experience is the way to gain knowledge about that.

I'll be looking to buy my first car around the turn of the new year, however, it's gonna be something really cheap, as I need to save for a rally car and rally school.

well i do know alot about dsm's, ive owned and been around them for over 3 years. the car itself is reliable, IFF you take care of it. You gotta run nice fluids and change them regularly. With that said, unless you try to go over 450 at the tire, your probably going to be allright. to the guy who said 2g's are prone to crankwalk, uhh you are really into rumors arent you? Yes they do get crankwalk. But its only like 5% of the cars. The reason the 2g's do and the 1g's dont get it as much is because the 2g's have a crank angle sensor. when the crank "walks" it gets to far out of adjustment and the cas can't manage it. every car, no matter what is prone to this problem. it happens, but i wouldn't not buy a car because of so much internet hype. make sure you have the car you want to buy checked out throughly before you purchase it. the talons were made by dsm. dsm = diamond star motorsports which was a calabo with mitsu and chyr. talon's are about 3k cheaper than mitsu's on kelly bb. oh, there is no differences between the two cars, mitsu to chry. same motor, trans, everything. the body work is different and you can actually exchange them between cars if you wanted. forget all this, go find one and test drive it. then go drive a 240 with that crap 2.4 truck motor in it. you tell me which one u like better.

What is crankwalk... Also, say I get a talon, what blot on mods can I add on to the engine? What companies are good for parts / not extremely expenisve ( 16 (almost 17 :) ) without a job blows ass). And what type of shit should I not do to the car? ( Obivously I am not goign to get altazzas and a big ass wing  )

I kind of like the talon. How much can you pay for insurance? I bet you will be anally penetrated, seeing as to how you are 17. The word "turbo" does not help your cause either.

insurance is a bitch, no lie, about 1600 a year us dollars.

crank walk can be explained by going to:

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/walkingcrankshaft.htm

that site shows as well as explains what needs to be done to keep your car running straight:

http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/

basic mods:
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/2gupgradepath.htm

for purchasing parts goto
http://www.dsmtuners.com

click parts on the top menu and scroll for parts. that site links to retailers.

want to know if a part is worth a shit?

http://reviews.dsm.org/

that should keep you busy for a few years...

the Bridgestone Blizzaks are pretty good winter tires.
For a little less money you can try the Pirelli winter 210's

Judging by the cars u decided ...... u will have a limited budget rite?
Even tho those car might just cost u around 10k, the insurance for sure will hurt u.

All that aside, Talon is right away the most moddable car around the year, as for the 240, u need winter tires for sure. My friend has one and the tail in snow is like a dog seeing a pile of bones. Prelude, is very common, it's everywhere, if u want exclusitivity (sorry about my spelling), I suggest u stay away from that.

Hope it helps
