Diesel for Cars future?

I dont know how far will manufacturers go with diesel engine so I really
worry for cars future. Enough is engouh Just look at BMW: 330D, 530D
are sold easily everyday and 730D aswell. Much more, Volkwagen that
name GTI a car with diesel engine.
Another example with coupe, the guy that want to buy a peugeot 406
piniifarina can buy it with an HDI motor, Opel purpose is an astra spyder
with diesel too). And now Jaguar join the club!!!!
Why not an enzo JTD (imagine 4500 rpm and engage next) what a dream :?
When you hear somebody talking about the car he want own, it's 90% time
a diesel car. I only have something to say to those people Wake up diesel
sucks!!!!!!
Last trip I did in Itally(two years ago), I was amazed by the increased
number of diesel on the road it weren't like that four years ago.

Well in the 5 and 7 Series, especially in France or Italy, diesel sales are around 70% I think..

Sadly here in central Europe, ppl actually love diesels... for their economy, their couple and whatever else.. for sure not because of that lovely truck noise :D

Since you are in France, you know Turbo (sur M6)... and every time they rate a car, the major downside is usually something like... "to bad there is no diesel version so far"... crap :D

I think that the new BMW diesel engine is AMAZING....535d with 272bhp, 560Nm....same

horse power as the 735i....but the tourqe is a bit more..... :wink:

Now this is a super diesel engine!!! 8)

As a student i think i have to say "bring on the diesel" cos it's cheaper and the consumption is much better. :D

About the revs how many of you take your car to the red line on a regular basis?? :wink:

Mainly, the price per littre, that does it.
Here it's 0.25€ cheaper for diesel and you car needs less. I travel 800km's with 40 liters of diesel with ease, if i really watch it i could do 1000km's with that same 40 liters.


I really miss the torque in a NA, but I like the fact that you can rev it some more. For everyday use i prefer diesel, for the fun and joy a NA.

In the states the Diesel is very close in price to the lower grade gasoline so that really isn't the issue it's more for the fuel consumption end of it. And when you say NA do you mean Naturally Aspirated as in not forced induction? Or are you trying to say gasoline or Petroleum powered instead of Diesel?

I agree with fact that diesel is economic that's absolutly understandable
but dani_d_mas said honda got a long tradition with NA engine and it will
always be. that's right but they've just started producing diesel...
So let's have a look to my favorite everyday car ALFA ROMEO,
Last day I've talked with a seller that told me AR produce Diesel only
because people aked a lot for it. When I have a look to the amount of AR
JTD, it's about 80%. AR got a long tradition with NA engine and produce
magic motor like twin spark with an unbelievable symphony. If things
continue like that one day AR will says, hey why do we produce NA engine!!
look at the stats and they probably will stop building it. those guys are now
here for businesss, time changes, they don't care about history.
This scenario is may be far from our future (I hope so) but why does it
never happen.

I think we should consider it.

yeah, i believe there is less than 25 cent difference between regular grade gas and deisel. i hardly see any deisel vehicles in this part of michigan. what i do see, however, are more and more hybrid civics and prius'. i see hybrid cars becoming increasingly popular. sigh..... :(

I see alot of Diesel trucks and the occasional TDI VW but that's about it. And Hybrid's aren't that bad my Cousin has a Hybrid Civic and it's a pretty good car especially with the transmission it has (forgot what Honda calls it) never really shifts. Also I don't know if this has been mentioned but there was a Diesel at Lemans the past two days although didn't last too long, so that be a sign of the future...

Indeed, that's how I would put it too. People ain't stupid like you claim to buy diesels, not at all. Modern diesels are far from bad. But they certainly aren't as much fun as a good petrol engine. However, fun isn't a priority for most people. I like driving and I prefer a petrol engine but that doesn't mean I'll take a petrol engine if a diesel is far cheaper.

I think the biggest question is: are the diesely really that bad for health (exhaust)??? Some researcehs show that the diesel exhaust causes cancer, other do not. I guess it's future depends on these things ...

Diesels are bad for health but gasoline is bad for nature, and when nature is bad, it will be bad for th ppl, it stays the same, only badder.

True and I've heard enough to say that you can't compare the sound with a petrol engine. Even with an exhaust tuning it doesn't sound as nice as a petrol engine with a good exhaust. Much nicer, that's for sure, but not as nice as a petrol engine.

whatever happened to the "corn oil revolution" that was going to make desiels get a lot more MPG and so forth? are people doing this or did this idea die down?

I think that the future of diesel engines is going to be less certain when(i think in 2006) the price of the petrol is going to be the same as diesels, and, in addition, i think that in the following years, its going to be the future of direct injected engines though, im completely sure that in a few years time, the 100% of engines are going to be feeded by the direct injection

Uhm.. no idea what do you mean with "few years", but I fear in a "few years" petrol as we know it will be just a nice memory and we will see mre and more fuel cell, electric cars and such...

diesel's are great. with that said i probably won't buy one. if i were to buy a truck, for sure it would be. thamar is right about the torque. also, diesel's can run almost completely submerged, as long as they have exhaust and intake above water. thats pretty cool. also, diesels are dependable, they last a LONG time. Why do you think big rigs run them??? i dont know about you guys, but diesel is about 40 cents cheaper than 87 octane(lowest grade) down here in Ga. the price stays more static vs unleaded because of farming and besides it's easier to produce, less refinement.

but like i said, i like unleaded cars, specifically turbo ones. torque rules, but when you race corners, having more than 3k of revs is nice.

After the end of fossil fuel production, thats around in the 15 years or so, you'll have choices like electric engines prolly powered by liquid hydrogen or still our good old diesels that we could mod to biodiesel... petrol engine will be a thing of a chaotic past were capitalist stupidity reign... much like the crusades and inquisition time but now the black gold is the religion
