I am currently running 115kbps on a 56kbps modem in the country on a 28.8kb(i think) line. How is this possible? this is dialup for fucks sakes, thats why i havent been around much. i dont want to even turn off the internet for fear of this never occuring again....but i sure as hell hope it stays cause then i can get back into the jabbasworld swing of things like i want to! does ne one know whats up or how this is even possiblel!!?!

i dont understand it either, but i promise you that i can seriously tell the difference(as u would assume since it is 5 times faster than before) our avg connection times were 28.8. NEVER higher thats why i assumed the outside line was only capable of that speed. YES i love super highspeed GOD on my side internet! 8) :D

Umm... I'm sorry if that bursts any devine intervention bubbles, but I've made just the same observation whenever I download a file and it takes a bit too long for me to find a nice folder to save it to - the browser already starts downloading a few kilobytes of the file, but the download speed calculation starts when you click the "Save" button in the "save as" dialog. And it averages out the download speed, so it will give you too high speeds even at the end of the download.

I think chris is on the right track.. also some file types can be compressed massively during download giving a false speed reading ;)

That is pretty Usual... I hate to dissapoint you, but the 115kbps is simply the speed of the connection between your computer and the modem... it is external, isn't it?

If you do a download.. you'll see it will never reach steady 14KBytes/sec (same as 115 kbits/sec).

Sorry to dissapoint you, but God isn't worried with your connection, probably just helping the guys at Porsche!! eheh

i heard that there is new compression comming out enabling 56k to be much faster, althoe i haven't read into it yet.

^ A 56K modem can transmit at a theoretical max of 56K, so how can compression possibly increase the max speed? All that compression allows is for file sizes to be smaller and therefore take less time to download, but the connection speed is no different.

Is my experience a modem usually only downloads at about 44kbps.
Even if you got a connection at 115kbps, it still won't make a difference.
You can try this.
Try to get a 10Mb file from a very fast server, like ATI, Nvidia, even download.com and you can see what happens. I used to get about 5-6 Kbytes sec

Actually, I've gotten the same "connection" speed with my 14.4 modem before. Yes, it's an external modem and depending on the init string you sent to the modem, it'll return a different connection speed back to windows. i.e. the port connection speed or actual dialup connection speed.

You probably wonder why you need faster port speed than connection speed? Very simple, all modern modems have built in compression so you can get higher transfer speed than the "theoretical speed limit". Okay, there's a limit in terms of compression, but most things don't compress that well. Once, I was downloading a corrupted text file (basically all 0's) and the transfer rate was over 10k/s on a 33.6! If you don't believe me, try downloading a binary file and a text file from the same site. You'll see the transfer rate for the text file is *usually* faster.
