View Full Version : Drove another McLaren

A friend of mine just got his McLaren back from the factory shop after some adjustments made. He asked me to come down since I was in the area.

His lineup is as follows:

Red/Tan McLaren
Yellow Enzo
Red F50
Red F40
Red 2880GTO
Rosso Fiorano 575
Silver Z8
Yellow Murcielago
Black Gallardo
Blue 993 GT2
Black Arnage
Red M5 (E39)
Silver Vanquish
Silver DB7
Grey Jag XJR

There were also a Silver '30s Rolls and a Red Alfa GTV which belong to a frend of his who askedhimt o keep them temporarily. My friend also has a Continental GT, SL55 and someting else. He's getting a DB9 and an Elise, passed on the Murcie Barchetta (agrees that they're stupid w/o a working top), and will likely get a Pagani if they ever get legalized.

And the only car we drove was the McLaren, since he wanted me to see how it feels compared to the old clutch. I didn't hammer on it too hard because there are a LOT of cops around here due to Memorial Day weekend. It definetely feels better than before - I don't know how to describe it other than the power comes down a hell of a lot smoother than it did before. So yeah, whatever they did makes it drive better.

And yeah, getting into my 550 made me feel like I was in a 4 cylinder toyota.

I know, I know, all of you jokers are saying get pictures. But unlike TT, I don't ahve one grafted onto my wrist :D I'm supposed to do a few track days with him and a few other friends of mine in the next few months, so I'll try to take pictures then?

Enjoy,

Dan - you give me a call when you are in H-Town again - arrange some "gawk time" with a few local collections and I will bring the cameras... :D

TT/Pat: well, the problem with pictures is this: a lot of people really don't like their stuff published online. There are probably 50 collections like that or much better (I like vintage cars too) in this area, but very few people will be happy about posting them on. Next time I go down, I'll ask. Part of my problem is I don't get off from pictures myself, and I'm a lazy sack about them :) But, next time I go to see someone who has a lot of cars, I'll ask. I have to meet up with another friend who has a similar collection next week, so we'll see what he says.

Pat: he's in his 40s.

RC: only real collection I'm privy to is Jamail's. I don't think Sarofim's counts since he just owns like 10 bentleys. :D

Sounds like you had fun. Congrats on driving a car that most people won't ever see!

Cool boba , hope to get news from you , a couple of pictures would be nice , i am too trying to arrange something with the guy who has the Enzo f40 and stuff like that ( i published some pics ) , but he doesnt like to publish pics of his cars , maybe cuz its the only one in Chile and prolly one of 6 or 10 in South America , anyways at least you can ask about em :D

I can appreciate folks not wanting to have the car/name/location tied together.. in those cases, instead of doing 1,000 photo still-life style shots of the entire collection, perhaps 5 or so shots before you head out for the drive and then 3 or 4 more when moving... ;)

I mean it's not like you can stop people taking pictures in public.

What a nice lineup, Sounds like he actually uses them too...needing new clutches and all

Rc: pictures in public are one thing, but when a friend values his privacy, another friend shouldn't go about acting in a manner converse or compromising to that. I mean, it would be one thing if you "happen' to pass by while the garage door is up and take some shots, it's quite another thing if I do it while visiting a friend.

Plus he'll send me to an asylum for sittnig there taking pictures, wondering what the hell is wrong with me! :D

Actually - there's an idea. Next time I go down...I should have a friend "happen" to walk by with a camera... ;)

why can't you just take pictures and blur out the plate numbers, so know one can find out who owns it?

bobafett
05-30-2004, 10:35 PM
You tell me how many people own a Red/Tan McLaren and a Yellow Enzo... forget blurring the plate, that alone should give anyone who really wants to all the information they need.

i don't want this to sound insulting (the internet can do that sometimes) but did you guys already go threw the clutch break-in period?

also, as far as the picture issue is. you guys might see it as sharing the view of his collection. to him if he was to take pictures he might think of it as trying to show off. just a thought :D

bobafett
05-30-2004, 11:09 PM
Number: it wasn't an entirely new clutch, and didn't need break-in. It just needed some adjustments. Either way, break-in isn't an issue.

And thanks for your opinion.

It´s not that I don´t believe you but would really love to see some pictures of that collection, hopefully it´ll be posible. One question, do you know in what colour combination he is getting the DB9?

I perfectly understand what you mean, it could be very un-polite to come with a camera when a friend call you for a drive. So it's better ask him before.

You say he'd consider getting a Zonda if it were to be legalized...there are already at least two people who own Zondas...Wyclef Jean has one, and so does Benny Caiola.

must have been a blast man.

I believe you tho, even without pics...although pics would have been cool

bobafett

Sads: ask me if I care.

KaBlookie: That's what we were trying to figure out. It doesn't work under show & display because it's not out of production. Can't do a reVIN as a manufacturer because 1) it's illegal and 2) it's too easy to trace. I've seen this done with Lotus Motorsport exiges and it gets hairy then. You can't do a kit-car because it's not going to fly there. The only thing I can think of is having a foreign residence and then brning it every year under a tourist visa. But then you have to ship back and forth.

Interesting to find out, but I'm not buying one, so I'm not sure i care enough to find out. When I'm in that position, then I'll ask Benny. I know his nephew and also some close friends of his. :D

Brembo: some guys are totally cool. Like Jon Shirley - he'll open up his collection. Art Z too (and he has INSANE cars - like the F50 GT1 sn 001 that got crunked up by Johannes). Some guys just like anonymity.

What about that technological achievement stuff? I was told that is what makes the McLaren F1 legal here. It only allows so many miles a year or something.
Kind of stupid really, with cars like these, you should be able to import them without any problems. It's not like they are being used as daily drivers.

i know a very simple solution, just take pictures and pm them to TT or jabba, to prove your case, i am sure TT nore Jabba would leech the images on the net so your "friends" identiy can stay safe. And if anyone really wanted to prove your wrong (that i don't care for), all they have to do is fax or call Harold Dermott (the man incharge of sales of mclaren) and ask him first if there is a red/tan f1 in cali, if there is they can look up the owner at the DMV, unless he is driving the car with out plates.

Toronto

o and i more thing, i know your 22 and all but how come the pictures of your 550, where hosted on a school website http://www.menloschool.org/

if you read "Menlo School is an independent, coeducational college preparatory day school serving grades 6–12.
The Upper School enrolls 530 students in grades 9–12, and there are 220 Middle School students in grades 6–8." how many times have your failed a grade?

and i think your school mate normy360 is in on it too
o and what does your plate on your 550 stand for RRRRR1 i think it is?

***Edit*** please read below, bobafett has proven the reason for the hosting, as well as given me a little present :D, proving not only to me but to everyone that he does own a Ferrari, and has all five fingers

bobafett
06-02-2004, 12:33 AM
In my initial response, I was going to try to maintain some level of decorum, but right now, I don't give a shit.

Menlo School is the highschool I went to. Considered the best private school on the West Coast, it is for the priveledged and gifted few. Other choices for me personally were Choate, Exeter, Andover, Mills, etc. My peers were not only a cut above, but also part of a community you can't dream about. If you notice, the computer (setup for students and alums) on which it was on is no longer there. I hosted Norman's pictures there too as he didn't have a place. Norm, however, didn't go to my school. Look at his age, Einstein.

As for the provenance of my car, I think I have satisfied whatever I need to. After all, who else has a bike rack on their car? And as for the McLaren - call up Dermott. I'll be impressed if he tells you. Look up the plates - you won't find them due to dealer plates. And if you had READ what I had written, I didn't bring a camera. I don't go around snapping photos of cars because I don't get my jollies off that way. Some like it, I don't. In fact, I consider it rude and obnoxious. Furthermore, I don't consider these things such an extreme thing. I apologize if the social circles in which I interact generally aren't privy to someone like yourself.

RRRRI = Four R's and an I = Ferrari. Kind of hard to get through your skull?

Look dude, I came to share an experience which I can guarantee 99% of you will never have, and instead I'm lambasted. You don't believe I own this shit, fuck if I give a damn. I think I proved otherwise. Not my fault I'm 22 and successful, and you're my age shitting your life away.

Oh, and I've got one picture just to satisfy you.... Becuase I know pictures mean *SO* much, I did you a favor. I took a picture of the badge of MY 550 Maranello, with MY middle finger, telling YOU to fuck off and go back under the rock from which you came. Pity you avoided the coat-hanger.

--Dan

PS: I apologize to individuals who enjoy taking photos, individuals who don't fall under the category such as our dear friend above, to those who found my tone and demeaner condescending, and to those who find my picture offensive. To those who continue in skepticism, I offer this: I don't give a shit. My days continue unfettered knowing some acne-covered plebian is in doubt of something.

Well i guess i did get owend there, but i did find it rather unusual that a school would give you webspace after not atending it for more then 4 years, but that is what i guess all the money for private schools goes to.

and as for "acne-covered plebian" i don't find that offensive in anyway, i am very happy with what i drive, and who i drive in it, but i hope one day i can go to may dads house and show his collection of cars, but i am very happy with my S4 that i own that i payed for with my own money, i do not post any pics on jabbas simply because that i dont think anyone would care for it, but if anyone would want proof i would gladly pm them pictures

i hope i didn't offend you, but i think that most people did have some doubts, and i hope did clear up most people,

Hey calm down guys , Toronto you are a very active member , you should have read boba´s posts about his cars and friends , he has proved the ownership of the car and some other members knew him too ( if i remember correctly ) , i understand that you dont believe that a 22 years old guy can afford a 550 and asked some proofs as we had a lot of bullshitters b4 .

bobafett , there is no need to be too rude to toronto , he had his doubs and i think there are better manners to show it to him , there is no need to be so rude .

Hope this problem can be fixed out , you need to understand the exceptism ( sorry for the grammar ) about this suff in a public forum , hope this wont get you away from our community , as we ( at least me , and i think i represent most of our members ) found you efforts and contribution very valuable for our site , the same goes to you toronto , this was just a missunderstanding , hope it keeps that way ...
