Ew, did you really eat that? That is so odd. My roomate and I are in Anatomy, and we discected a Dogfish shark earlier in the academic year.

I've never heard of anyone eating sharks. But I'm not a big seafood fan and that may contribute. Do people really eat sharks on a normal basis? I know people eat sharks' fins.

Shark is fantastic, especially thresher (sp?) shark. Seafood in general is good.

Ya we ate it. Chances are a lot of you have eaten it as well. After the shark was brought home we did some research to figure out the best way to gut it and to find some recipes. We found that it is actually quite a commonly eaten fish and some parts of Europe actually use this for fish and chips.

Sure the water is dirty, the air is dirty, everything is a little dirty. If I really cared about dirt, i.e. pollution, I wouldnt live in LA.

I was surprised 2 years ago too when I first heard of shark meat being eaten, but it turned out it's completely normal. As for SFDMALEX it sure looks innocent, that can't stop us (humans) eating it, does Tuna or Salmon fish look evil ? ;)

Can't believe missed this topic, indeed that last pic is hilarious, I'm guessing spear fishing takes a bit of skill aswell- at least you didn't just do it for sport  hope it tasted good :D

You obviously dont know what your talking about. If you did then you would know that marinating a fish in a form of citric acid, in this case orange juice, is very common for it neutralizes bacteria. I take it you dont cook freshly caught seafood very often...

@ AL - spear fishing is a lot of fun and doesnt require too much skill. You can get the Hawaiian sling (spear) for about 20-30 USD and then you just go snorkling and case after the little bastards LOL. Much more pro-active than regular fishing, altought I enjoy that as well.

@Dropot and SFD - sorry about misleading you guys as to the size of the fish LOL. Believe me that little bastard wasnt innocent, in fact the little bugger started it.

mmmmmmmmmmmm, shark fin soup..... now that is some good stuff. You ate a fish that died of a sickness? If it was anything other than cancer, id think you're crazy. And whats wrong with the water!?!?! The more screwed up water you drink, the more tollerence you have to it. Just like if you are always outside as a kid and stay the same way as an adult, you will be less likely to have alergies, and your body will be used to the polluted air.

You ate a fish that died of a sickness?

No, the little bugger was hunted down and speared with a hawaiian sling. It died of natural causes, i.e. we done killed it.

@sameerrao - LMAO I hope that things not looking for me. Not much I could do with the flimsy sling and a diving knife.

@oscargarza - ya it doesnt look especially tasty, but its pretty good. I would suggest seeing if your local seafood guy has some shark. Thresher (sp?) is really good, tastes like swordfish.

I do know what I'm talking about, you don't even need the citric acid
the heat of the fire gets rid of all bacteria. And btw for how long did you leave it marinaded.

novass
05-25-2004, 11:04 PM
^^^ actually you do need the acid as the heat wont neutralize the uria and some of the other bacteria. This was explained to me by my friend that is a sushi chef and he said even if we do grill it we should soak it in the acid. We marinated it in the fridge for an hour or so. I dont know why you think it looks disgusting, its just an orangish liquid. But I dont really care as I am sure there are more than one way to cook fish. Its long since been killed, cooked and eaten and it was good, so end of story.

The day I finished my diving certification, there were two guys who came back from deep ocean spear fishing with 4 huge chests full of fish. They caught this giant hogfish, sucker has four teeth at the front of its mouth mean lookin thing. On of em had just shot a fish, and got attacked by a hammerhead. They said they were about 100 to 140 ft under the water fishing, and when heading back to the boat with there catch about 50ft under the hammer head charged em, and hit one of the divers, and they ended up killin it with a power head, all in all some really cool lookin fish. Next tournament ill try and get some pics.
