SEAT Toledo Prototipo at the Madrid Show

The Madrid Motor Show (21 May – 30 May 2004) sees the unveiling of another stunning prototype from SEAT – the Toledo Prototipo. This innovative saloon previews the look and characteristics of the production Toledo which is scheduled for launch later this year.

The Toledo is the second model in the new generation SEAT range which was started with the acclaimed Altea. It shares much of the Altea’s looks and style, but with an even more versatile interior and more luggage space.

The new SEAT family traits of cat’s eye headlights and wide central grille are easily recognised on the Toledo Prototipo. The sweeping line from headlights to roof is kept clean by a SEAT innovation, windscreen wipers hidden in the A-pillar. The SEAT dynamic line, first seen on the Salsa concept car, is very clearly visible on this prototype and is highlighted further by two-tone paint – platinum above and copper below the line.

Even with the strong family Altea resemblance, the Toledo Prototipo distinguishes itself in several important ways. From the outside its most striking feature is the stepped rear hatch, which provides a wide easy-access opening to the 500 litre capacity boot. The name TOLEDO is centred across the hatch under the familiar SEAT "S" badge. The boot itself is two-tiered, with a moveable shelf that can be set at different heights to divide the space. For even more flexibility and secure cargo carriage, the boot floor has compartments with moveable panels, and a diverse array of cubby holes, hooks and nets means there is a place for everything.

It is with the interior that the SEAT design team have excelled themselves using both traditional and ultra-modern materials to create a bright, spacious, functional cabin carefully colour co-ordinated to the exterior.

Natural leather graces the upholstery, steering wheel, gearknob, instrument hood, armrests and lower console and contrasts strongly with a chainmail-like material on the floor. The dashboard has two distinct colours and textures: a pale, hard high-tech surface close to the windscreen which matches the mouldings on the doors, and a darker hatch-patterned surface directly in front of the driver and passenger. The large central console, slightly oriented towards the driver, houses the audio, navigation and climate control systems and has a titanium-coloured surround. The front sport seats have multiple adjustments and pockets and folding trays on the backs. To increase boot space the rear seat slides forward and also folds completely flat.

The Toledo Prototipo also features the latest multi-media so everyone on board will be entertained. Both front seat head rests have 7 inch colour screens mounted in the back for viewing from the rear seat. Viewing options (TV or DVD) are chosen by individual credit card-sized remote controls or buttons at the base of the front central armrest. The screens can be used to show the same or different programmes, and each screen has individual headphones. As long as the car is parked, the front seat occupants can also watch TV or a DVD on the 6.5 inch sat nav screen. This screen is also independent of the rear screens, so all passengers can enjoy their own entertainment, but if they choose they can all watch the same programme and sound can be played through the Toledo’s audio system.

The Toledo Prototipo is powered by the 2.0 litre 150 PS petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox combination which is available in the Altea. It has the special SEAT-developed Agile Chassis, which combines special suspension ratings, stiffer shock absorbers, more flexible coils, and firm silentblocks with an electronic programme that modulates the power steering according to driving speed and conditions. The Agile Chassis gives precise handling and sharper responses and ESP guarantees handling stability.

The Toledo Prototipo has 19 inch alloy wheels with five double-spokes and visible bolts and the SEAT logo in red on each hub. Large ventilated disc brakes front and rear can be seen through the spokes.

Hopefully they will keep it as a prototype.

If the Avantime didn't have any success this won't either.

I'm not fond of two things...

the two-tone paint job

and the flabby ass.

If they fix that, it would look more like a direct (albeit upmarket) competitor to Mitsu's upcoming Colt. Which is a good thing actually.

The new Toledo is bigger than the Colt... it's almost like a van, it's a longer Altea.

Is it? It looked like the size of a mitsu colt.

If that's the case, it won't even make "cute." It's just ugly then.

The rear end is a rounded version of renaults avantgarde...

It's Avantime... but it reminds me the Vel Satis.

New SEAT Toledo
Just two months after it was seen as a prototype at the Madrid Motor Show, the new Toledo has become a reality. With the new Toledo SEAT has created a family car which offers more versatility, functionality and unprecedented space for a car in this class.

The third generation Toledo retains the essence of its predecessors, combining the notchback styling of the current model (launched in 1998) with the rear hatch of the first Toledo (1991), but without giving up one of the most appealing features for Toledo users: a large volume boot.

The new Toledo will have its public debut in September at the International Automobile Salon in Paris, and will be on sale in some European markets before the end of the year and in the UK early 2005.

The second of the new generation SEATs

The new Toledo is the second model in the new generation of SEAT cars that began with the Altea. Its size and versatility make it first and foremost a family car: an attractive, large volume car that perfectly utilises its length to create a spacious interior and a capacious boot. It is conceived, designed and built by SEAT and portrays the image and features that identify all new models from the Spanish brand.

The new Toledo stands out with its innovative and attractive design. Particularly distinctive are the shape of the rear hatch, the large front grille and the expressive headlights. The SEAT dynamic line, a design feature running from the front wheel arch, along the doors and descending to the rear wheel, is clearly visible along the sides.

At 4.50 metres long and 1.77 metres wide, the new Toledo offers more interior space than some longer vehicles thanks to its mono-volume design and its height of 1.57 metres. It also boasts a two-level luggage compartment with a 500 litre capacity.

Bluetooth and MP3

One of the outstanding innovations of the new SEAT Toledo is Bluetooth technology, which allows a standardised wireless communication between two mobile devices. The main advantage is that it does not require a physical connection between the mobile telephone and the vehicle to provide a completely hands-free system.

The Bluetooth system is operated by multi-function buttons in the steering wheel. Calls can be accepted, disconnected and one of the most important features, voice recognition, accessed through these buttons. When using this feature, the driver can verbally place a call to a number or a name or save names and numbers in the phone book – all while keeping his or her hands on the wheel.

The audio system of the new Toledo is perfectly integrated into the central console of the dashboard and offers a slot at the top for standard or MP3 format CDs.

Four engines

The new Toledo will be available with four different engines, two petrol – 150 bhp (110 kW) 2.0 FSI and 102 bhp (75 kW) 1.6 – and two Diesel – 140 bhp (103 kW) 2.0 TDI and 105 bhp (77 kW) 1.9.

The two most powerful engines – the two-litre FSI and TDI – are combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, the FSI will be available with automatic and sequential Tiptronic 6-speed gearbox. The 2.0 TDI will have the option of the new DSG 6-speed gearbox.

The new Toledo also offers a high degree of safety. ABS, TCS and ESP systems are all included, along with emergency brake assistance (EBA). Electro-mechanical power steering and the SEAT developed Agile Chassis combined with a multi-link rear axle give the Toledo excellent stability and very dynamic driving characteristics.

As for passive safety, the Toledo leaves the factory equipped with six airbags as standard: driver and passenger airbags, and side and head airbags. It also includes three-point seatbelts for all five seats, with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners at the front and the Isofix system for securing child seats integrated in the back seats.

Manufactured in Martorell

The new Toledo is exclusively produced in the SEAT factory at Martorell where leading edge technology, such as laser welding for the body assembly, is implemented in manufacturing. Use of high-resistance, fully galvanised steel, modern production processes and strict on-line quality controls allow for a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty on the body.

Ive seen this Toledo somewhere else, and to be honest i dislike the shape of it as well, not as the previous two generation of toledos which were pretty...for me it remains a vel satis a bit as well.....but the toledo looks better than the renault though, its not a difficult achievement at the end of the day
