Cheap Cars

What are peoples opinions about the Scions (other than styling ) and the movement towards these cheaper cars to attract young people? As a person in that target age of these cars, I think they have some appeal but not when you can buy a used car that is so much nicer for the same price. Consider a new Scion tC. You could buy a used Acura TL, Integra, RSX, Toyota Celica, and tons of other domestic and imported cars for the same price. So why buy a new tC? It is the same thing with the Honda Element. It was targeted at my age group, but it is still selling mostly to parents and people over 40. What gives? Can a company really target the younger age group? Do you see the new cars coming out within the next few years (Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac Solstice, Honda Jazz/Fit, tC, etc) being successful in targeting the younger drivers?



PS--I did a search for Scion and young and a few other things and didn't come up with anything like this, so hopefully this isn't a previously discussed topic.

It's all a scam, makes old ppl want to have this cars.....Toyota already has cars that appeal to 'young ppl', its the Used section....these cars are cheap, reliable and 10 times cheaper on insurance than any Scion or shit box Element can ever be.

You may be able to buy a used car for less money that will deliver
more car, but you have to remember that no matter how good the
reputation of the car is it is still a "used" car so you really have no
idea how well the former owner kept the car. So you really can't
compare the value of a used car to a new car directly. In the new
car market, IMO, the scion offers a great vallue for the money. It
offers a nice mix of standard equipment, cheap options, sportiness,
and great relliability at a cheap price which is very appealing to the
younger market.

personally i hate scion and all those japanize imports but i think that they targeting a specfic market will not work cuase everyone is diffent
not every 21 year old is gunna waant a hot hatch

An important point is that the average car costumer isn't a car freak like us. This means that the driving experience isn't that important. An easy parked, practical, economical car might sell if it's cheap and looks ok.

And another thing. There is something special about driving a new car. The smell and everything just feels good.

I like small cars, but I'd go for a used car with good handling and a little bit more grunt. Because of the driving experience, of course.

Yes, but there are quite a few who do want one. There is a
general trend in the younger buyers for hot hatches....no...
not everyone of them likes them but so many do that toyota
would be crazy to not get in on it.

Scions are not very beautifull , but its like a buzz in the square model , that one that looks like a van , they are selling strong in the USA , but i would rather spend the 12k in other car , maybe a 2001 model

being a youth in toyota's "target market" i am not interested in these cars at all. for the same money you could by a very nice used car and have money left over to play with. plus, i dont know a lot of people around my age who have 14 or 15 K to throw at a new car and still pay for rent/food/college..... :?

I cannot stand the scion...IMO its the ugliest car you can buy new...currently

HardcoreSRT4, I think you hit it right on the head. Most people in college or right out of high school can't afford to swing a big car payment on top of their tuition or low wages. I'm sure the desire is there for everyone to have a nice new car, but the money doesn't work out unless Mommy and Daddy are paying for them. I agree that having a nice new car with all the smells and "newness" is cool, but I don't think that with how long cars are lasting now it is justified to take a huge hit as you drive it off the lot.
