This happened about 3 hours ago now and i am lucky to be writing this right now!! Me and 2 of my friends were on our way back from playing 9 holes just to pass some time away. My friend was driving and i was in the back, the was a chevrolet cavlier z24 with a few riced up modifcations. So we were on the highway doing about 120km/hr, give or take 5km/h, when all of a sudden we heard this knocking, about 3 seconds later the front left wheel just fell off the car!!!!! my friend did not even panic or anything, just steered with his left hand and slowed the car down with the handbrake, he left a stretch of rubber with one back tire for about 300 feet at least.
We were very lucky because we were going straight and there was no traffic eaither way, if this would have happened on a turn or had there been traffic, the result would have not been pretty.
we had to wait around for a while for a truck to come get the car, so we looked at the wheel and all of the 5 bolts were cracked off!! pretty crazy. he just got the car out of the garage 2 days ago because he put his summer tires on.

But all in all it was a weird thing to happen!!

glad you're not hurt!!!
weird thing to happen though. a similar thing happened to my friend on his chevy blazer. one day while driving it the same thing happened, but it sheared the threads right off the screws. turned out to be an expensive mishap.

Glad everyone came out fine. This sounds pretty much like what happened to Francois Duval's Ford Focus in the Cyprus WRC. :o

Or they screwed the wheels on to hard, twisting the boults

Uhm.. could be indeed! That air gun they use can go up to crazy pressure and probably they forgot to set it up at a lower value...

i do not think it was loosened, it came out of the garage on thursday. One of the people that stopped to see if we were ok said that it happens to gm vehicles often. he says after you get your tires chaged or what not you have to tighten them up again the next day or the next.

Another person who was a machanic, stopped and looked at the wheel and said that 3 were put on too tight and 2 were hardly put on at all!!!

So i do not really know what to believe

well, when you put on new rims you have to torque them to spec. also, after you ride on them for a certain time you have to go back and retorque them to double check. different alloys require...blah blah blah. probably someone didn't set the air tool up right. you better get all the others bolts replaced. (you could just check them but you would really have to know what your doing and have confidence cause next time it very well could be your life)

i know exectly what you mean, it was weird too because not one of us panicked. Usually if something like that happens you would probably hit the brake, but he used the handbrake to slow it down. I thought he did a great job.

If they sheared off then that is usually down to over tightening, and all 3 on one side (for 5 stud) would have to go in order for the wheel to completely come off.
If the nuts came loose then the wheel would probably bend the studs whilst coming off, not shear them

Whoa, glad to hear that nobody was hurt! Good thing your friend was able to keep his cool and know how to control the car in a situation like that. Too many people would just freak out and slam on the breaks making things much worse. Hope everything turns out to be ok with getting the car fixed.

wow....crazy man...in a corner i would have been another story...was it because of the air gun???
