In 1990 Zagato designed the Lancia Hyena, based on the Lancia Delta HF Integrale EVO. Therefore it has permanent four wheel drive and a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine, transversely mounted in the front. Thanks to a turbo and intercooler it pushes out 260 hp and 324 Nm. So it is even more powerful than the car it is based upon (210 hp and 298Nm). That is because of an ECU upgrade. The gearbox is a 5 speed manual. Top speed is 233 km/h and apparently it hit 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. It was equipped with specially designed Koni struts and handled better than the Integrale EVO.
Lancia wasn't going to build it and Dutchman Paul Koot of Lusso Services (if my memory serves me right) acquired a license from Zagato to build it instead. If you wanted one, you'd need a donor car (Delta HF Integrale EVO) and Koot would convert it to a Hyena, like Zagato did. It weighs 1,148 kg, so it's also lighter (the HF Integrale weighs in at 1,300 kg). The bodywork is handcrafted out of aluminium and carbon kevlar and mounted on a steel framework. The dashboard is very very light. Paul Koot: "The Hyena dashboard was not derived from the Alfa Romeo SZ. The instruments were, but the total interior was made out of structural carbon fibre in a 1A, autoclave-cured quality:
Stock Hyena
Dashboard +/- 17 kg 2,5 kg
Door panels ,, 2,5 kg 700 gr.
Tunnel ,, 4 kg 800 gr.
The total weight of all carbon parts did not exceed 5 kg. per car. The interior production cost price was approx. US$ 7,500 per car."
Due to either "management changes at Fiat/Lancia" or "the end of the production for the Delta HF Integrale EVO" (sources are not unamimous on this), only 24 were ever built between 1992 and 1993. Plans ranged from 75 to 500 cars. Unfortunately that never happened. The dark blue car in the last two pictures is Paul Koot's own car, number 24, the only one in Blu Madras.
I saw a couple of them over the years (I took the pictures of the yellow one, which attends the annual Italian car event at the Assen track every year) and I'm still in love with this car. In silver, black or dark blue it is simply to die for! :D
