View Full Version : How do you organize your videos?

Chaos in 1983!

I was doing a bit of cleaning up on videos I wouldn't use anymore...and I thought there must be a better way to organize them...it's kinda hard keeping track of all the videos, how do you guys orginize yours?...is there some kind of program that lets you have your videos in a gallery kind of way?

I just have different folders for each make (e.g a BMW, Ferrari, Lambo folder etc.)
Then I also made a 'comparison' folder for videos including more than one car.....basically a folder for any category I could come up with.

man i'm so organized with my videos it's fucking ridiculous. it's difficult to describe but let's just say there's a special folder for every genre, category, year, etc. i even have .txt files for each folder listing the name of the video, the size of the file, who made the file, and lists of links where these files or similar files can be found.

my fight videos are sorted as thus:
fighter highlights
vs fights highlights
events/demonstrations highlights

my drum corps videos are sorted as thus:
Cavaliers
miscellaneous cavalier videos
other drum corps

my car videos are sorted as thus:
TV:
all large non-wrc videos including clarkson/tiff/top gear specials
Rally:
Compilations:
2002 compilation videos
2003 compilation videos
2004 compilation videos
Rally Yank highlight videos
Miscellaneous highlight videos
TV:
all season review videos
all full rally episode videos from speed channel and channel 4
Best Motoring rally videos
Short & Other:
smaller/shorter wrc-related videos that don't fit into the above categories

Large Videos:
any large/special videos and features that i have yet to watch (three in there right now: clarkson's shootout, F1 2003 review, WRC 2003 review)

all in all there's about 490 of them videos totalling about 23 gigs (i know, pathetic)

i can list all my vids if anyone wants, and if you can come up with quick convenient and efficient way for me to share them with any of you, i'd be more than willing to do so

Well I only have car videos.. all of the are named like :

Cars - Top Gear - Aston Martin DB9 vs Eurostar train

Of course if they don't come from a TV show its just Cars - short description...

Then of course I burn them, I have 130+ CD and they are classified in sections: full episodes, DVD rips, Best Motoring, Various.
Every CD has its own code and I have a word document will all the codes (divided into the different groups) and for every code you can see all the vids inside the CD ;) Easier to find if you have a video or not ;)

I don't use it now but there is a program called "whereisit" that check your CDs and create a list for you  A friend talked me about this but i don't try it.

Compilations
Drag Race
Dyno Runs
Ferrari
Full Movies
Funny

Rally
Street Race
Top Gear - 5th Gear - Best Motoring - Reviews

And then I have a folder "not checked yet" where I put the video I haven't watched yet

^^^^ mine is similar if not the same

having folders named for each category like street racing, track racing, quarter mile, compilations, best motoring, top gear and 5th gear.

when i burned them all to disk,i have a list on my PC that i just add to for each category so i know what i have by just opening up the list.

I have most carmakers in different folders.
i.e.
Ferrari
BMW
Pagani Zonda
Lamborghini
Porsche
etc
etc

All fifth gear and top gear are in their own folders and every s4eason in its own folder..

Video names include most important features of the video.. for example
Top Gear - Mitsubishi EVO 6 vs Subaru Impreza vs Nissan Skyline vs Porsche Turbo.avi

Full lenght DVDs and DVD rips have been burned onto DVD-s..

phsh. I only have one folder.

I rename them so that they start with the name of the shows.
I don't collect in-car, amateur videos, so...
but i do collect official commercial of cars
they go by company names
and the others go by the languages

Top Gear - Lamborghini Diablo SE.avi
Fifth Gear - Pagani Zonda Roadster.avi
(GER)Motorvision - Ferrari 360 Modena.avi
Porsche Carrera GT Official
etc...

i did that with my first and only cd of car videos (not counting another cd with the original mov files from the first season of bmw films), but I had one miserable file in a toyota directory, and that was the guideline for some more car manufacturers.
Now I have:
-Videos:
-Autos
-Caricas (cartoons)
- Clone wars (you all know these)
- Música (music...duh!)
-nike (some of the tv ads, only the soccer)
- pelis (movies, full ones)
- varios (for anything else)
the auto section still is a mess, and I have 5thgear, bmwfilms, dvdrips, f1,MB factory, top gear folders. there must be around 110 files without any special category, but I don't really have the time to get pretty organized just like the geek (that an excellent way,but I'm not that tidy)

i use name modifiers to find what i might be looking for

eg
car manufacturer/model/year (if more then one name in same folder)

Ford mustang gt 99.avi

if multiple cars are the case, then i follow the same formula basically

Ford mustang gt Chevy camaro z28.avi

it makes for longer names, but allows speedy searches if im looking for a specific model... sometimes im in a mood to watch Subarus, or mabey Ferrari's

also, there are more then one folder

in car street racing
quarter mile
top gear
5th gear
TV reviews
stunts
track use
misc
comedy

i like this system for videos on HDD, but it lacks when its burned to CD... i like TT's system for that :)

I'll have to do some organising someday. 100+ CD's, at least a third of them unmarked ...
I'll die before I sort them, I guess

To facilitate my classification of my videos, I classify them according to the carmakers (BMW, Volvo, AUDI, etc...) and their country origin (America, Deutschland, UK, France, Italia, Japan, etc....) I classify them automatically when I download the new videos. This is the easier way to find them.

I just split it up by company for the most part. BMW, Ferrari, Lambo and so on. But I've got seperate folders for DVD rips, sportscar racing, Rally. It makes for a total of 40GB.

I have a 'Motoring' folder with 31 files - then within this folder, I have another folder called 'Tiff Needell' with 30 files.

Altogether, it comes 1.02 gig - however, this doesn't include my other Motoring folder for pictures and scanned articles - that one comes to 70mb.

I kinda do the same but not as tech, I have 1 folder racing vid's eveything with car's I put there, some big files are on 1 cd I have about almost the same burnt on too CD! maybee like 15 less than you, some I just keep on my other hard drive, cause they are really good and you can't get tired of watching it so it always there when you want it. :D But as for all those 100 plus cd's There is only like 3-6 that are labeled with the vid on the cd so It's really frustrating too find a certain vid, even though you know you have it!

If the video is from no concret TV program I separate them according to the company: Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche...However, if the video is from a TV program like 5th Gear, Top Gear, Best Motoring, I have them in concret folders with the name of the TV show.

hahaah.. with the wealth of options... time to get a blu-ray dvd burner whenever it comes out *grin*

but seriously, i prefer cataloging programs cos you can add comments etc and search through that.. whereisit was suggested but there are many more out there depending on whether you want offline search access, cd-rom indexing etcetc...
