I saw a (valid) science program yesterday and found out that the Earth's magnetic field is weakening, because the entire magnetic field will reverse completely. The magnetic field comes out from the south pole and enters the north pole, in the future, the field will come out from the north and enter the south. But the thing is, during the reversal the magnetic field won't function as it is, and the space radiation will be able to bombard Earth. The reversal may last thousands of years and it already has begun. During the process, spontaneous volcanic eruptions will occur along with violent tectonic movements.(earthquakes) That means, life as we know it may be wiped out due to exposure to solar wind and other bad space rays and volcanoes...like that of the Mars. Isn't that exciting?

haha good one PB

but i have heard that when it reveres we'll be stuck to the ground and can't move. too much bullshit from american tv shows i reckon

It is indeed true that this occurs. It is a cycle that happens. That being said I hadn't heard that the cycle had begun its down shift, only that they see it near that. I also hadn't heard about the radiation bombardment.

well this might take 1000's of year so who cares we will all be dead, and it is not our problem, you can say the same thing about the sum blowing up in millions of years, so who cares,

i agree with Dani, CGT hear i come :D

Funny part is that he's right. I watched the same show the other night. That Nova program sure has some cool stuff sometimes.
I'll be long dead before any of this takes place, so I don't much care. Besides, it's not like there will be anything we can do about it!

Yep its true. We learn't that in GCSE physics, maybe geography. Its happened hundreds of times before, (not for a while obviously!) You can see it in the rock formations from volcanoes. There are layers of rocks with differnt magnetic polarities or sumink when they are formed.

LMAO I saw the same program. Pretty interesting stuff, but wtf was up with that anime style techno music they kept playing?

Trying to grab the Pokemon Kids attention, securing a future audience.

So is it fair to say humans won't make it to the year 4000?

Being the local Physics major, I have to back HeilSvenska on this. It is a regular cycle that happens on a fairly regular basis (in terms of thousands of years). The polar shift is not an immediate thing, it actually takes quite a long time for the magnetic poles to reorient themselves and the truth is that we don't exactly know what the effects of the shift will be. It is fairly likely that more solar and interstellar radiation may penetrate to the ground and that may well change weather patterns, plate tectonic movement and a variety of other "natural" processes. I doubt we'll see much of a change in any of our lifetimes though.
